We’re thrilled to announce that Sandbox, a subsidiary of See Saw Projects, is launching its very first production: Middlegame, a bold new play by Raleigh playwright Andrea Black.
This reimagining of Medea—told through the lens of a Black woman in America uses puppetry and masks (created in collaboration with Paperhand Puppet Intervention) to craft a visual world that is both mythic and urgent.

After a powerful first reading, Sandbox is moving into the next phase: bringing the puppets and masks to life. These elements are essential to the spiritual and symbolic language of the play, and we need your help to make them happen! No donation amount is too small.

From Andrea, “If you’ve ever been moved by stories of myth and motherhood, or the quiet injustices of everyday life, this play is for you. And if you believe in live theater as a space for transformation and truth-telling, we would love your support.”

I was just emailing participants in my improv-storytelling fusion class at the Durham Center for Senior Life this article, and figured more folks need to know!

Improv may not seem like an obvious psychological treatment, but recent studies show it can boost creativity and confidence and decrease anxiety and stress.

It's more important than ever to lean into the arts for social connection. Stay tuned for our next project and let's take care of one another.

US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released an advisory Tuesday addressing the "epidemic of loneliness and isolation" affecting the country and laying out a framework for a "National Strategy to Advance Social Connection."

I have been quiet on here for about a year since I had my baby, but See Saw was making art happen with communities all the while! Big shout out to Mandy Eats Moore for leading virtual acting classes with the Chapel Hill Parks & Rec Adapted Rec Program. And I'm finishing work as an artist with the Artists in Healthcare class at Duke University where I've been leading imaginative sessions with elders in memory care at Durham Center for Senior Life. Below is an image of some notes we captured when we explored our favorite things about Halloween a few weeks ago.

Last week I led a group of elders with dementia in a TimeSlips Creative Storytelling session based around the Olympics. They spoke about Simone Biles recent description of the twisties"...the phenomenon that can cause gymnasts to lose their sense of space and dimension in midair — even if they have performed the same maneuver for years without problems" and said that's how they feel almost every day.

There was a sense of mutual recognition amongst the participants with dementia when someone related to the twisties like this- nodding of the head, saying "that's me!" and even chuckling.

For me as a person without dementia, it was a moment of empathy and I think a lot of us could imagine the feeling of being midair and not knowing what's up or down.

It is an honor to create space for creativity and honesty with these participants. I hope we can all recognize our own moments of getting the twisties--and know that we will have support there to catch us when we fall. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/olympics/what-are-twisties-simone-biles-explains-gymnastics-struggle-tokyo-olympics-n1275460
