This week is Banned Books Week in the US. “Let books be. Protect the freedom to read” check out American Library Association.

Here are 5 banned books I have read this year and recommend :

📘Caste - Isabel Wilkerson
📘A Handmaid’s Tale - Margaret Atwood
📘Parable of the Sower - Octavia Butler
📘To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
📘Hunger Games series - Suzanne Collins my favorite is Sunrise on the reaping)

Trusting the process. Experimenting and reworking two pieces - 1. Smocking that was printed and untied post printing, and 2. A neutral quilt that was damaged /stained.

Just finished and gifted this quilt piece to Blackbird Books & Coffee • Raleigh, NC (my favorite places for books and they have a great banned book selection).

I’m currently reading “Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler” for their book club next week. If you are interested in some of the other banned books I’ve picked up from them, they include:

In the studio today, slow stitching and reworking this piece into something new.

In my first ever critique a couple of years ago, folks gave feedback on what they saw without knowing the inspiration. Almost all of the feedback was in the ballpark.

Do you find you forget to take stock through the year of what you have actually accomplished? I do. Why is that?

As mentioned yesterday, I was feeling lost within my art practice, so last week, I grounded myself with a plan and actions based on my goals/values and felt much better being re-aligned and refocused.

Today, I thought I’d revisit things I have done this year, and I was pleasantly surprised. What have been your accomplishments (big or small)? Let me know and let’s celebrate them ❤️

I started this piece during COVID and at the time I just couldn’t take anything else on. That meant letting go of perfection. Giving myself grace. I loved the colors and the slight wonkiness, it expressed my emotional state. I think it’s a good reminder that good is sometimes good enough. I frequently need this reminder. Happy to see it finished.

This artwork “One of these Things” has been on a journey…✈️

It was exhibited in France, Italy, Czech Republic, and in the US (Illinois, Pennsylvania and Virginia). 🌏

It almost didn’t make it home. It was lost but then found and now it’s safe at home. 🏠

“One of these things” was a process for me, as I learned to find my voice to express feelings, which I find hard to do in words.

This piece is my wish that we embrace differences. Different is beautiful, wonderful, inspiring and makes life and things around us interesting. It saddens me that often being different is used to divide us, introduce fear, hate or violence. We need to do better.
