I have been thinking about the relationship between art and invention for a few years now. Technology, science and art have always lived in the same realms, with Creativity as the link.

The first 3D optical scanner was invented by a French sculptor, Francois Willeme.

The telegraph system was invented by an American painter, Samuel Morse, whose life long wish was to make America the country for high art and culture, to leave something for mankind and change the world.

Louis Daguerre, was a realist painter, who famously went on to invent photography and produce the Daguerreotype.

The idea for the telescope is thought to have come from both spectacle-making artisans and magicians who used various magnifying lenses to play with perception. The magicians, of course, did not receive recognition for their experiments in expanding perception.

It is arguable that many well known inventions / technological systems were born of the ideas of artists and creative people, who never received credit for their work. One possible reason for this, as mentioned by Simon Penny in his essay"Bridging Two Cultures: Toward an Interdisciplinary History of the Artist-Inventor and the Machine-Artwork", is that the art community retains a practice of freely sharing intellectual property while having little power in the legal department as compared to larger companies that often "borrow" the ideas of artists without a single note of credit to the original artist-inventor.

With this thought, and with respect for all the artists who are playing with technologies / machine-making, inventing new uses for technology, or for just having wonderfully crazy ideas that inspire us to imagine, Flanders Gallery is opening it's newest exhibit, "Artist/Inventor" on Friday, January 23rd. The exhibit will remain up into the first week of March.

Please join us tomorrow for the First Friday opening of "Brave New World," an exhibition of photographs, video, and film by Sabine Gruffat. Gruffat's work is shown internationally, most notably her and collaborator Bill Brown's latest feature-length documentary "Speculation Nation," which debuted at this year's Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival.

On view next door, Lump will be featuring “Transmutation: New Work by Tyler Wolf.” We are excited to be working closely with our new neighbors. The parking beside and behind the building is available for tomorrow night's reception.

If you find yourself in New Orleans for the Biennial, check out Lotte Geeven's project at MoMart, part of the Prospect P3+ International Biennial Satellite Program (opening October 25th, 2014).

Lotte exhibited her 24 hour piece "Sovereign" with Flanders in the February 2014 exhibit, "Frames Per Second." It is well worth it to spend some time with her work.

We have two different opportunities at Flanders right now!
1. Volunteer with helping us change out exhibitions next week. We need assistance with deinstallation, wall repair and mainly assisting in painting a large scale mural with New York based artists Greg Lindquist and Mary Mattingly. Help is needed March 16-21. Skill in painting is preferred but not required.
2. Internships! We are looking for people interested in a career in the arts that would like to intern with gallery staff. This is an educational internship, staff is committed to interns leaving the program with extensive knowledge about the business of private galleries.
Interested in either opportunity? Contact [email protected] for more info!
