Why is it that we spend 90% of our wedding budget on things that won't outlive the wedding day?

Most couples are focused on the flowers, catering, DJ, the wedding dress, and everything else we're told we need to pay for to make the day perfect.

If this is what you're focused on, then yes, the day will probably be a perfect memory.

And hopefully, you will have hired a quality photographer and/or videographer to capture those wonderful memories on film so you can remember them forever.

But if you're like me, most of those photos will stay in an album. Or in a folder on your computer. You'll make the "I graduated to wife!" post with the best of your beautiful photos and everyone will congratulate you for a week or so.

Then normalcy will return and a tinge of regret will set in, and you'll wish you had something just as perfect as your special day that really captured that once-in-a-lifetime feeling you had.

Taking a break from telling you about wedding painting today because I feel like this is more important...

I was in western NC when I was inspired to create the Wild Apothecary collection.

The beauty of Appalachia in this region is incomparable, but after recent events, so is the devastation.

North Carolina is my home state. Fortunately, the hurricane wasn't very destructive in my area, but entire towns and cities in the mountains have been obliterated.

People are without clean water. Homes are flooded and left soaking in mud. Entire sections of the highway literally fell off the side of a mountain. Rescue efforts are continuing and volunteer teams are still asking for supplies.

We've given as we've been able, but I'd like to provide you with an opportunity to give while enjoying a piece of art inspired by the beauty of this part of the world.

For as long as relief is needed, I've decided to give half of the sale of any original from the Wild Apothecary collection to Wine To Water's Helene relief efforts.

Wine To Water is a nonprofit organization based in Boone, North Carolina that is providing door-to-door delivery of clean water, hot meals, and non-potable water for flushing to those stranded without essential supplies.

I've volunteered with this organization in the past, and I chose them because they're not only reputable, but they're headquartered in the region that was hit the hardest. They know what the area's needs are.

Let's talk about pricing.

I get these kinds of messages all the time, and I get it. You want to make sure a painting isn't completely out of your budget.

However, I always respond this way:

I'm always down to give you more information, and I want to be super transparent about pricing. But that conversation is better had over a video call, which is why I recommend booking a meeting with me.

I recommend booking a call for 2 reasons:

1. I can get to know you better - what you like/don't like, exactly what you're looking for, and I can ask you questions that help me get to know you better. Ultimately, having this conversation helps me create a better painting for you.

2. Since I'm able to get to know you better and ask questions, I can give you a personalized quote based on your specific situation.

Basically, meeting face-to-face over video gives us the best opportunity to be able to work something out and get you the wedding painting you've always dreamed of.

Sometimes you feel stuck right before you find your calling.

The picture below was taken in October of 2022.

At the time, we were living in Colorado Springs, and personally, it was not for me. I hated the cold. I hated that everything was an ugly tan color. I hated that no one had grass in their yard. I hated that people who live in Colorado are absolutely obsessed with living in Colorado...

Most of all, I felt alone. Brandon was great, but it took us forever to make friends there. We knew no one.

But - I had just landed a great remote job that I was really good at. (If you didn't know, I started out as a data scientist).

It was a time that was full of ups and downs, struggling with depression, and trying to be grateful for what I did have.

In the meantime, I dealt with my loneliness by adopting two kittens. And yes, they helped:)

As I began to slowly adjust after living in CO for a year, we were suddenly able to move back to NC.

It was a relief to be around our support system again, especially since I came back pregnant with our first child.

But something was still missing.

I enjoyed my job. I love to problem solve. Build solutions. Explain concepts.

Except I felt a void in myself. A deep need to be physically creative, not just creatively problem-solve.

It was at that point that I saw an ad for a professional art program that I could take online. The opportunity came at the exact right time I needed it to. When I was mentally ready to jump into something that other people might not understand.

So that's how this journey started.

Coming out of depression. Back in my home state. Working a full time job. At five months pregnant. Painting late into the night after work.

I made the choice to follow my calling, when I wasn't even sure that's what it was yet.

Fast forward to now: I do this full time while taking care of my kids. We're still working toward big goals and not everything comes easy, but I'm so glad I made the choice to pursue this profession and share my creativity with the world.

A HUGE congrats to this beautiful couple that got married in western NC this past weekend, despite all of the flooding madness.

When I painted this commission for a friend a few months ago, I never intended to make prints of it.

You won't find it anywhere on my website, but it's received so much love on facebook lately!

Recently someone reached out to me wanting to buy a print of this painting, and she ended up purchasing a hand-embellished version. If you're not familiar with the term, it means that I add original painted brushstrokes and a hand-written signature to the print, giving it some of the texture and special touches typically only reserved for originals.

Hand embellished prints are a perfect middle ground between prints and originals!

What do you think of the final result?

I've always had trouble slowing down.

For years, my insecurity has been that no matter what I do or how much I accomplish, it will never be enough.

Being aware of those thoughts and identifying them as lies is hard enough, but the feeling has been especially difficult to overcome during my pregnancies.

Pregnancy MAKES you slow down. There's no working through lunch, running to this or that appointment, or getting all 8 things on your to-do list done.

Pregnancy has taught me patience. Not everything needs to be done in a day. The world will keep spinning if I take a nap, and I need to give myself some grace.

Who else has had to work through a similar insecurity? ✋
