FB community, in support of The Hospitality Center in Racine, the 4th Annual Groov'n In The Garden is collecting personal care items and feminine hygiene products for those in need at The Hospitality Center. These items are in high demand.

History doesn't just happen in textbooks, it happens in our neighborhoods, our churches, our schools, and our streets.

This 1980 newspaper photo captures renowned journalist Malvin Goode, the first Black network news correspondent, visiting Racine as the keynote speaker for the NAACP-Racine Authorized Page Freedom Fund Dinner.

Standing alongside local leaders Julian Thomas and Thomas White, this moment reminds us that our community has long been connected to the national movement for justice, leadership, and opportunity.

Too often, stories like these are forgotten, tucked away in newspaper archives or family photo albums. Yet they tell us who we are, what we've overcome, and whose shoulders we stand upon.

At Mahogany Black Arts & Cultural Center , we believe preserving local Black history isn't simply about remembering the past, it's about strengthening our future. When we recover these stories, we inspire new generations to lead, create, and continue the work of those who came before them.

Every preserved photograph. Every untold story becomes a piece of our collective legacy.

Our next Community Luminary is another local legend.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Edward White, Sr. was a community advocate and leader in the state of Wisconsin. A soldier for human rights and equality.

White's list of accomplishments is matched only by his humility and sense of humor. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1962 and served as a Chef until he was Honorably Discharged. In 1965, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Fort Valley State College (University), Fort Valley, GA and became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

Upon arriving in Wisconsin as a new addition to the UW Extension programs he furthered his studies at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside and Milwaukee.

For 35 years, he held the position of Executive Director of the Racine/Kenosha Community Action Agency and helped many citizens in the community. Previously, he was employed as a Soil and Water Conservationist with Racine County University Extension Service and later served as Executive Director of the Project Breakthru Community Center at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center for the City of Racine, Wisconsin Government

Tom served as the President of the Wisconsin National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) State Conference of Branches for over 40 years, being elected every two (2) years. He served three (3) 4-year terms on the NAACP National Board of Directors, representing Region III of the association.

During his years as State President, the Wisconsin Conference authored and published a state newsletter, which circulated throughout the association, organized/hosted the first and most successful NAACP National Convention on record. He served on the Board of Directors for the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC); the Urban League of Racine and Kenosha. and the Racine Housing Authority, to name a few.

White united with the Second Missionary Baptist Church and served as Chairman of its Trustee Board. He was also founder of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, Racine, WI, served as Deacon, Chairman of the Trustee Board and Co-Chairman of the Church Board.

Tom White also had a passion for photography, he was known for capturing local, regional and national events, his portraits with a variety of celebrities and other notable figures have been added to the permanent archives of Mahogany Black Arts & Cultural Center

Tom White passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015.

The communities of Racine and Kenosha, and the state of Wisconsin are grateful for his impact.
