His photos add a singular beauty to our publications." - Gordon Todd, Communications MgrFred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center He and his wife and business partner, Jane Hall, both have a profound and deep love, respect, and appreciation for Nature. “It nurtures our soul” is how Jane expresses their relationship to Nature. Keith's knowledge and life long study of the ecosystems of the Northwest,
where he has lived his entire life, is evident in the minute details of his photographs. Keith and Jane travel to other regions of the country for picture taking, though most of their work is done in the dark room and office at their home in the woods on the Olympic Peninsula. Although Keith “sees an image as a whole”, there are four elements that come together to create his remarkable photographs. These are light, color, composition, and gesture. Keith says “light is what photography is all about”. He never uses artificial lighting. The photography of Ernest Haas influenced Keith’s own awareness of color, showing him the range and diversity that was available. Dennis Stock’s photography guided Keith in his early years as a photographer in developing his eye for composition. The final element, influenced by light, is what Keith calls gesture. It is the turned head and open beak of a song bird, the glance of a tree frog peaking out of a flower, the breeze on a seed head of prairie grass. It is that fleeting moment that makes a photograph a vibrant, living, artistic record of Nature’s beauty.
