I’m turning 60 this week. It feels like a big one, a birthday that deserves my attention. I thought about having a party, but that’s not really my style. Instead I decided to feed my soul by taking a road trip to a place I’ve always wanted to visit. Day one in a quiet spot on the coast of Nova Scotia, where the ocean is allowed to simply be, and so am I.

Sneak peek at a fabric installation I’m working on for my Lyme series. It’s fun to branch out and try something new, and this conceptual piece, when finished, will add another dimension to the exhibition’s message. The show will be up November 5 at SUNY Adirondack’s Visual Arts Gallery.

Deanna lost her identity when Lyme disease took over her body. There were signs when she was just a child, but the illness became disabling during her senior year in high school. She had been an active, happy, competitive tennis player and outdoor enthusiast when terrifying symptoms made even getting out of bed almost impossible. Years later she is better, but not symptom-free.

The experience fueled a fire in Deanna. She knew she wanted to dedicate her life to advocating for Lyme patients. She now works at Center for Lyme Action, helping to grow federal funding for Lyme.

Thank you, Deanna for sharing your difficult journey with me, and for the important work you do. You are an inspiration.
