Before a tattoo takes shape on your skin, the room is set for the work, and for you. 🖤

The chair helps us position you and your piece with care. Focused lighting helps us see the details clearly. The tattoo machine is the tool that carries the design onto skin, and the setup is arranged around the needs of your piece.

Every part has a purpose. That quiet preparation is part of the craft, too.

A tiny tattoo can be beautiful, and sometimes it needs a little more room to stay readable over time. ✨

With very small, detailed designs, fine lines and tiny spaces can soften as a tattoo ages. When details sit too close together, they may become less distinct. That doesn’t mean every small tattoo is destined to blur; simple shapes with enough open space can work beautifully at a smaller scale.

If your idea has lots of detail, we may suggest slightly more size, a bolder line, or a different placement. It’s not about changing your vision for you. It’s about helping you understand the options so you can decide what feels right.

Send us your idea, and we’ll help you explore what will give it room to breathe. 🖤

Not sure whether your idea belongs in color or black and gray? Start with the design, not the price. 🖤🎨

Color can make a piece feel bold, graphic, playful, or vivid. It helps separate elements through hue and contrast, but the design still needs enough scale for each color area to stay clear. Strong outlines and intentional color placement help the image read from across the room.

Black and gray puts the focus on line, value, texture, and atmosphere. Shading can create depth and softness without relying on color, while contrast helps guide the eye. It can work beautifully for quiet, dramatic, detailed, or timeless ideas, but very fine detail still needs room to breathe.

Think about how your concept should settle over time, too. All tattoos soften as they heal and age. Black and gray values may become gentler, while color can lose some saturation over the years, especially with sun exposure. Good line spacing, thoughtful contrast, and the right scale matter more than choosing the “better” option.

There isn’t one correct answer, only the approach that fits the feeling, structure, and story you’re carrying. If you have an idea but not the vocabulary yet, that’s okay. Start by telling us what you want it to feel like. 🍂

Sometimes the hardest part is saying the idea out loud.

Maybe you have a feeling, a memory, a sketch, or only a few disconnected words. That’s enough to begin. You don’t need a perfect concept, and you won’t be judged for still figuring it out.

At Tell-Tale Art Studios, the conversation starts with listening. You can take your time, ask questions, change direction, and let the idea become clearer before anything is drawn. The process should feel private, unhurried, and collaborative, with you at the center and your artist there to help guide the vision.

This October, “Your Story, Told in Ink” is about making room for the parts of your idea that are still taking shape. Send us your idea when you’re ready, and let’s start a conversation. 🖤

Cody Dermott is back at Tell-Tale Art Studios as a guest artist, and he’s open for appointments. 🖤

When we asked what he specializes in, Cody kept it simple: “I do black and grey and love horror black and grey. That’s my bio.”

For October’s “Your Story, Told in Ink” campaign, the focus is on the idea you’ve been carrying with you: maybe a film, a character, a mask, or a piece of dark imagery that stayed with you. Cody’s work is a guide for translating that atmosphere into a tattoo through contrast, texture, and shadow.

If you’ve been holding onto an idea, send us the concept and start a conversation about working with Cody.

The award is the frame. The story belongs to the piece and the person wearing it. 🐉🏆

At the Central PA Tattoo & Horror Expo 2026, Erik took 1st place in the Traditional category with this dragon calf tattoo. The client’s piece was also identified as a tattoo competition finalist.

A competition win is about more than the trophy. It means the work held up under scrutiny: the design, the line work, the color, and the way it lives on the body.

Erik is a formally trained, multi-time award-winning Traditional tattoo artist at Tell-Tale Art Studios. He brings the experience and technical eye; the client brings the idea and the skin where the story takes shape.

Your Story, Told in Ink. 🖤

From reference to skin, the process is a conversation. 🖊️

A reference image gives us a direction, not a finished tattoo.

Before the needle touches skin, the design is studied, redrawn, and refined. Scale is adjusted for the placement. Line weight is considered for clarity and longevity. Shapes are edited so the design follows the body instead of fighting it. When the stencil goes on, placement becomes part of the artwork too.

Some details stay. Some change. That back-and-forth is where the custom work happens.

The goal isn’t to copy an image from a screen. It’s to build something that makes sense on your body, in the style and scale that fit your idea.

Have a reference you want to explore? Send Us Your Idea or start a conversation with our team. 🖤
