The theme for this year’s festival is “Endings, Beginnings and the Humanity In Between.” The 2026 festival features companies from India, Denmark and Germany, along with USA-based artists from New York, North Carolina, Illinois and Hawaii. Now in its 30th year since its inception in 1996, the festival brings a range of artistic engagements from performances for kids and adults, to workshops, special film screenings and panel discussions.

Amid the lack of federal funding, the 2026 Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival has been made possible with the generous support of Sandglass Theater’s funders, sponsors, board members, and individual donors and volunteers.

Our 2026 Festival Sponsors include Oak Meadow, Landmark College, M & T Bank, C & S Wholesale Grocers, Mascoma Bank, Chroma Technologies, Prentiss Smith & Company, Sages Pub, 118 Elliot, Latchis Theater, and Hilltop Montessori School.
Puppets in the Green Mountains 2026 Funders include The National Performance Network, The Jim Henson Foundation, Goethe Institute, The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Boston, Danish Art Foundation, Two West Foundation, The Arts Council of Windham County, the Puppet Slam Network, Vermont Community Foundation Spark Grant and the Crossroads: Touring New England program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the six New England state arts agencies.

Our Summer Series opens this weekend with the first performance of 'The City That Slept' by Tom Tuke of Paloma Puppets on June 5th & 6th at 7pm along with a special workshop. This inventive show combines shadow puppetry, lantern puppets, and large-scale marionettes. The piece transforms dreams collected from New York City residents into a poetic visual landscape. Interviews recorded in Union Square and atmospheric soundscapes from the city create an immersive theatrical environment where dreams drift through skyscrapers and avenues as the city slowly falls asleep.

Also part of this weekend's events is a workshop by Tuke on June 6th at 11am exploring the water-shadow puppetry technique used in the show. Participants will create their own floating shadow puppets and experiment with how the puppets move across swirling water projections. The workshop is open to adults and teenagers, with a maximum capacity of 12 participants.

Tickets to the show are $20 and the workshop fee is $40. Book yours on https://www.sandglasstheater.org/summer-series

All shows and workshops will take place at Sandglass Theater on 17 Kimball Hill, Putney, VT
