Welcome to Earth2Arts!
Hello… having grown up in a large family in Louisville, KY with parents who gave my siblings and I many travel experiences often centered around the natural world and history, I developed a deep affinity for the outdoors and “wandering”, especially through exploring our wonderful country in our 21’ Escape travel trailer. As such, I have tried to capture this love of all things natural, in my photography, pine needle and sweet grass basketry, and pottery.
Pine Needle and Sweetgrass Basketry:
All of my work in basketry is inspired by nature. I love working with natural materials and incorporating elements such as, leather, wood, stone agates, fibers, feathers, butterfly wings, antlers, palm inflorescence and pottery into my basketry. I have sold my work at art fairs, to private collectors, and made donations for auction at fundraisers for charity, but most recently two of my pieces were selected to be among ten that were chosen by an international architectural firm to be displayed in the Fort Lauderdale Airport for the next five years. So if you happen to be taking a flight from there and find yourself in Terminal 3, be sure to look for my pieces in the public lounge.
As I have honed my craft, not only making more complex compositions, the challenge for me now, is not to just make beautiful one-of-a-kind creations, but rather to create pieces that I have infused with symbolism and meaning. Thus, every basket has it own unique story, one which I hope will touch its owner in a deeply personal way. It is a great honor when someone asks me to make a basket for them and I try to incorporate elements that are unique and special to them, whether it is a piece of jewelry, navy squadron patch, seashell, or another treasured memento…you get the idea.. My commission work is perhaps the most gratifying because of the connection I try to forge between the basket and it owner’s own story.
Pottery:
A little over two years ago, I delved into pottery at the urging of a good friend. Initially, my goal was to make pieces that I could coil around with pine needle and sweetgrass, however, I have found that I love this media for its own sake. Learning to both hand build and throw clay on a wheel has been a bit of a challenge for me, given my arthritis, yet, there is nothing quite like taking a lump of clay and fashioning it into something both useful and beautiful. As I progress in this art form, I hope to move beyond, bowls, spoon rests, plates, wall pockets, etc. and make more increasingly intricate, artistic, and original pieces.
Thank you for allowing me to share my story with you…
