Elliott Wise is amazing!

Imagine working on a single project for 27 years straight, then having Michelangelo say the work is good enough to exist in paradise. This was the experience of Lorenzo Ghiberti, who created Florence Cathedral’s famous baptistry doors called the Gates of Paradise, replicas of which are on display at BYU’s Museum of Art (MOA). On March 6, Associate Professor Elliott Wise (Eucharistic and Liturgical Imagery) gave a lecture at the MOA entitled “Sacred Symbolism in the Gates of Paradise,” explaining the origin of these historic doors and the way they symbolically point to Christ.

- The Lord Looketh on the Heart

Despite their righteousness in their youth, Israel’s first kings all fell victim to their vices, just as the prophet Samuel predicted. Saul succumbed to jealousy, David was overcome by lust, and Solomon slipped into idolatry. The books of Samuel and Kings are largely about the rise and fall of these leaders. Eventually, a perfect king would arrive in Israel, but he brought neither weapons nor warhorses; instead, he carried forgiveness and a message of peace.

Look at this sculpture of the Savior. What attributes make Christ a perfect leader?

Does your family have what it takes to solve a Top Secret Mystery at the MOA?

Summer at the MOA has begun with a brand new family mystery! Throughout the month of June, take on the roles of secret agents to prevent an art heist at the museum. Follow clues, explore the galleries, and outwit the clever thieves. If you succeed, every child in your family will get to take home a free art kit from our treasure chest! It's a mission impossible; are you ready for it?

Mystery at the MOA is Part I of our Summer at the MOA series (previously known as the Family Arts Festival). Once a single-day activity, now the fun lasts all summer long! This mission is FREE and open to all families with children of any ages (younger children will need assistance, but all will have FUN)! Stop by the Front Desk of the Museum any time this month to solve the mystery and claim your prize!

- My Heart Rejoiceth in the Lord

To the Israelites, Ruth the Moabitess was seen as an outsider. They had a volatile relationship with the Moabites: sometimes friendly, often hostile. She wasn’t raised in their religion or traditions, and her husband’s death left her without any wealth or power. Nevertheless, her faith, resilience, and loyalty blessed the nation who took her in, and she became the grandmother of King David and an ancestor of Jesus Christ.

How has someone different from you blessed your life?

- The Lord Raised Up a Deliverer

Throughout the scriptures, the Israelites repeated a cycle of falling away and returning to the Lord. Each cycle, the Lord promised them a judge and a deliverer that would lead them back to righteousness. As fulfillment of that promise, Jesus Christ is the ultimate judge, deliverer, and Redeemer that welcomes all of God’s children as they return to Him. In Albrecht Dürer’s engraving 'Sol Justitiae' ('The Judge'), Dürer blends the symbols of Christ with the symbols of justice. Christ holds the sword to bring swift judgement, and the scales of balance to hold all accountable for their thoughts and deeds. However, instead of the traditional blindfold, the Judge is illuminated by a three-pronged halo, representing His all-knowing watchfulness and connection to the Father and the Holy Ghost. He sits upon a lion, representing Christ's divinity and royalty in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), 'Sol Justitiae' ('The Judge'), c.1501, engraving, 4 x 3 inches. Brigham Young University Museum of Art, purchase/gift of Mahonri M. Young Estate, 1959.

Let's take a closer look at Plexus #29, the enormous, rainbow-colored artwork beneath our skylight. This iconic installation by artist is made up of more than 80 miles of thread of different colors. That's the distance from the MOA to the Wyoming border! Each individual strand combines with the others to form a dazzling spectrum of light and color that seems to shimmer as the viewer moves around it and as the natural light changes throughout the day.
