That’s the question behind Good Optics—a portrait series exploring how our ideas of “good” and “bad” shape the way we see ourselves and each other.

Oscar is the first portrait in the series.

I’m combining my background in psychology with my love of realistic portraiture to explore the stories we tell ourselves about people—and what happens when we look a little closer.

Somewhere between crippling imposter syndrome and out of this world confidence.

Somewhere between "followers don't equal success" and banging my head against the wall because my following hasn't budged.

Somewhere between "I'm just getting started" and burnout.

Somewhere between where I was and where I'm going to be.

I actually cried when I finished this one 🙈

If you follow me you'll know this was a bit of a departure from what I've been doing for the past six years. I thought I was so brave pursuing art- but I realized I was still playing safe and trying to create art I knew people would like, that I knew people admired.
For this piece I let myself play again.
When I put the finishing touches on and set down the palette knife I realized I had been fully in a flow state for the last two hours. Every piece I've created has my heart in it but this one somehow felt... more. More authentic maybe?
Here's to a new season of being a braver artist 🥂
