The Portuguese Festival recently hosted its Meet the Artist event at the Harbor Hotel where Bill Fitts, the 2026 Festival Artist, was on hand to speak about his striking gouache painting of the lobster boat, Miss Lilly, captained by Mike Rego and named after his daughter. The Miss Lilly will be the lead boat in the procession of fishing vessels and pleasure craft, at the Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday, June 28, and will proudly carry the statue of St. Peter, patron Saint of fishermen, as it passes by Bishop DaCunha for the traditional blessing given for a safe and prosperous year on the water.
Music was provided by Rob Scott for the gathering, and Provincetown’s Town Crier Daniel Gómez Llata added his signature flair with lively bell-ringing and spirited announcements.
Beautiful raffle baskets filled with Portuguese items were created by Shannon Sawyer, and
Guests enjoyed a slide show of fishing vessels and fishermen from the past, along with video clips of Portuguese dancers arranged by Nancy Silva. The slide show appeared to be a highlight for Mike Coelho who knew the history of every boat that appeared!
Thank you to Mary-Jo and Susan Avellar for handling the door, and a Festival volunteer Kathryn Winkler for serving appetizers.
We extend our gratitude to those who helped sponsor this event, Jaime-Lyn Daley, General Manager of the hotel, who generously provided the space for our gathering, as well as Liz Lovati of Angel Foods and Liz’s Café for providing the catering of delicious appetizers and dessert that helped make this community event such a success.
It truly does take a village.
