2013 was the year of Lorde.

At the time, we had no idea a 16-year-old working in her bedroom on the other side of the world could rattle the culture with a song inspired by a photo of Kansas City Royal George Brett, an athlete in a sport she never followed. The culture was richer for it.

Also rattling: Edward Snowden, an anonymous IT contractor who became a household name by blowing the whistle on global surveillance. Traitor or hero? Probably he contains multitudes. Meanwhile, the surveillance economy of advertisers following your digital breadcrumbs was just getting started.

On screen, Orange Was the New Black, Breaking Bad broke for good, and streaming looked like peak TV rather than a House of Cards.

Some of it held up better than others. In our Neighbourhood, Impalas are still Tame and Elephants are still in a Cage opened by a Black Key.

Fontaines D.C. leapt up our list this week with “Tongue,” ahead of Friday’s (10/16) album drop of DOPAMINE CHAMBER. 🚀

đź‘€ New on our list:

🔥 Temper City, “Reverse Psychology”

Second single from one of 2026’s breakouts. The bass guitar is straight banger.

💙 girl in red, “blue”

Her first single in a while finds her shifting colors. “I know all your terms and I’m accepting your conditions” is a lyric for our times. October is her month.

🌊 Cameron Winter, “If You Turn Back Now”

The Geese frontman channels Dylan, maybe a little Tom Waits, on this piano-driven song from his Carnegie Hall show. Lucas: “memorable, unique voice…kind of like Neutral Milk Hotel.”

📻 Hear it on WBRU and our Today’s Top Indie playlist 🎧 featuring Fontaines D.C.

For this we are featuring a brand-new non-vintage design WBRU T-shirt on our staff as they prepared to meet a new crop of interns (hence the nametags). We might do a drop of this design; if you want one of your very own, let us know in the comments.

Quiet at the top of our top ten, but things are percolating below it. đź‘€ New this week:

🔥 The Linda Lindas “Burning Out”

Our top new tune is from the punky, young LA girl group. Nigel says: “The sound of summer past and present in one song. Awesome!”

🎬 Fontaines D.C. “Tongue”

Second single from the upcoming DOPAMINE CHAMBER. Brinnie: “I love how it builds to become more cinematic and immersive.”

🌊 Dominic Fike “Small Town”

Tohi: “Chorus moves in smooth like the ocean, brass gives an uplifting edge to the chords at the end.” HOW TO QUIT SMOKING drops Oct 30.

Tune in on WBRU 📻 livestream and our Today’s Top Indie playlist 🎧

Take a trip back to 2005... ⏳

A strange new site called YouTube just launched, MySpace ruled the web, Katrina devastated the Gulf, and Kanye went off-script on live TV. Tom Cruise lost his mind on Oprah’s couch, and we were suddenly watching music videos on tiny iPod screens.

Emo and pop-punk broke through, fueled by American Idiots, Sugar, Helena, and Work. This Photograph Is Proof. It was very much fueled by ramen.

Some of it hasn’t aged so well (cough Nickelback cough), but at the very top, the Brightside was personified and Feel Good had a whole damn company. Was it the best of you?

When Stephen sent this to us we thought: shopping bag? rain poncho? If the latter, good for His reply set us straight: Lol... a banner. I remember taking from one of the after summer concert after parties. Cant remember where it was. Some backyard type bar... If you've got a WBRU...thing to share, send it along.
