Today Bach & Boogie is at the New England Alliance conference.

A year ago, we had only run two classes, and we were still experimenting with our structure, flow, and philosophy.

Now we’re exploring how to bring more intergenerational music classes to senior living communities across New England.

It’s been really encouraging to hear reactions from people who have spent decades in the senior living world:

“I’ve never seen something like this here before!”

“Okay, I’ve been waiting patiently for you to come back because I’ve been dying to know what Bach & Boogie is!”

“One of our homes has so many former teachers - I just know they would love this.”

“I believe in this. This WILL work.”

As a newcomer to the senior living space, it’s been heartening to receive such a warm response from people in the industry.

Seeing toddlers, parents, and seniors sharing music across generations still feels magical every time I see it. 🎶

I sometimes get asked, ‘why should I send my child to Bach and Boogie?’

First, I always mention that we use real music, like Janis Joplin and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and have a backbone of amazing classical music like Beethoven, Debussy, and Carnival of the Animals.

But then I think about what really sets us apart, and I think that it has to do with the fact that we only operate inside of retirement homes. It’s a part of our mission: that we bring generations together through the joy of music.

So, a big part of the value Bach and Boogie brings for little ones is getting to know people who are different from you.

‘Exposure to shared humanity’ I sometimes call it.

It’s different from learning about shapes, colors, eighth notes or what a violin is. It’s more like learning about how to share, but more like - how to share the world. How to share a room. How to have an interaction. How to have fun through music in community.

It might be a different value proposition for everyone.

Join us for 40 seconds of Vivaldi class today. 🌟🎻

We are having a wonderful time in the memory care wing at Wingate on Blackstone - what an adorable community. My daughter couldn’t wait to show her ‘senior friends’ the dress she chose to wear for class today, and she already remembered that Madeline brings the stuffed animals and baby dolls, and went right over to her as soon as we started class.

We learned about Happy, exciting Allegro through Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: Spring! 🌷🌻☀️

And we even discussed why Dominica asked her name so many times:

“Sometimes, when you get older, your brain doesn’t work so well for remembering! It’s okay, you don’t have to answer each time - we can stay kind and move along.”

This session runs for four more Saturday mornings here in Providence through the end of June - come check it out and share joy around music with community. 💛🌟

So excited to announce a new season of Bach & Boogie coming to this spring! 🎶

And we’re thrilled to introduce our new Melrose facilitator: Rosana - also known as Red.

Red is a college science educator, leads the singing group at the Melrose Senior Center, and brings a joyful mix of timeless oldies, pop favorites, and beloved film music (yes… Disney!) to her classes.

Bach & Boogie is a joyful music class for babies & toddlers (0–4) held inside a senior living community - where little ones, parents, and elders connect through music, movement, and smiles.

Even though I love playing intentionally with my toddler, I don’t think every moment has to be engineered for her. It’s good for kids to see us enjoying the world too - which for me sometimes means squeezing in two minutes of piano during our play sessions.

Today the inspiration was mixing a Chopin Nocturne, a little Bach, and a moment of Nessun Dorma. Three of my favorite melodies, stitched together in a single musical sentence. ❤️🎶

It’s good for me, good for her, and I keep it short so she doesn’t get frustrated with the piano (or my attention). Most of the time I’m on the floor with her - but a bit of music that isn’t just Moana goes a long way 😆
