—THERE is something miraculous about a garden in full bloom: a thousand gestures of color, each spontaneous, yet forming an exquisite order. ¶ I’m drawn to the mysterious boundary between chaos and harmony, where light becomes color, color becomes emotion, and the ordinary reveals something sacred. ¶ These paintings are less about flowers than the experience of being alive among them. 🌐

—WHEN I returned to Utah from my illustration adventure in New York City, I started doing some sculpture for my yard and studio. I made a totem pole for my fire pit and another, smaller one for my mailbox post. This smaller hanging sculpture was a variation of a wood engraving that appeared years earlier in my graphic novel Cypher. ¶ When I built my new studio, I wanted to make a large papier-mâché replica of a whale vertebra to hang from the ceiling. That project proved too large, so I did the acrylic painting (48” x 48”) in image 3. ¶ These projects were strangely satisfying, but they ultimately took too much time away from painting, so I abandoned them. One image that did make it through to my final painting career was my Anasazi-inspired Bee logo, image 4. 🌐

—THIS plein air painting has a slightly different vibe than most of my field work because the paint was starting to setup but I just kept working. It has a slight Albert Pinkham Ryder vibe which I like. It’s heading to the Manitou Galleries Small Works Show. 🌐

—FOR this commission, the challenge was to unite two disparate subjects through a vibrant orange-and-purple palette. Careful glazing brought the colors into harmony while preserving each painting’s distinct character. A unique exercise in the unifying power of color. 🌐

—GRATEFUL to see this painting installed at Marian, Inc, Indianapolis, purchased through the Eiteljorg Museum show several years ago. I’m deeply appreciative of that connection. 🌐
