—GLAZING day for SHADOW & LIGHT, 48x96”. This painting was created from a series of visits to the Grand Canyon, a source of constant inspiration. Moran Point is one of my favorite places on the planet. 2). Animated closeup. 🌐

—TWILIGHT GOLD, 18x18”. The desert often saves its best performance for the final moments of the day. Paintings like this remind me that beauty is often most powerful just before it disappears. 🌐

—GLAZING day for VALLEY LIGHT, 48x96”. I wanted this painting to reflect that brief moment when autumn light floods a mountain valley and everything is charged from within—the rocks, the water, the air itself. 🌐

—MOUNTAIN LIGHT, 48x48”. I’ve always believed the right painting does more than decorate a room. It changes the emotional atmosphere of the space. Light, texture, color, and scale can make an elegant interior feel even more alive. ¶ This piece was inspired by the movement of water through mountain stone and the golden light that turns an ordinary canyon into something luminous. 🌐

—THIS one is almost done. The rock mass on the left needs to be simplified. Some of the highlights need more color vibration and complexity. The distant mountain with the spot of golden aspen in the foothills isn’t quite working so I will have to modify that. But overall working pretty good. MOUNTAIN LIGHT, 48x48”. 🌐

—I’VE been working on a smaller version of my recent 48x96” Grand Canyon painting. I intentionally pushed it higher chromatically for more vibration and heat against the cool shadows. ¶ The Eiteljorg Museum only permits paintings up to a certain size for Quest for the West, so the larger version was simply too big. This one will most likely be my main offering for the September 11–12 show in Indianapolis. ¶ Some of my favorite moments in the painting are hidden in the close-ups—little geological accidents of texture and color that feel like aerial landscapes (images 2-4). CANYON COLOR, 36x72”. 🌐

—AUTUMN RADIANCE, (with new glazes, 36x36”). ¶ For a few weeks in fall, the aspens turn into sheets of pure light against the cool shadows of water and rock. I used thick palette knife strokes and marbled color to hold onto the feeling of movement, light, and cool flowing air before the season disappears. 🌐

—THIS just came out in Western Art & Architecture and it’s pretty satisfying to see in print! ¶ The painting started with a handful of Grand Canyon studies and a lot of time in the studio pushing paint around, trying to hold onto that light. Nice to see the texture and color translate so well onto the page. 🌐
