A note from AS220 and Providence Dance Festival at AS220

Dear artists, supporters and friends of the Providence Dance Festival at AS220 and Steez.

We hope that you and your loved ones are well and able to care for each other during these uncertain times.

We are writing today to let you know that AS220 has decided to cancel all events, and keep our public spaces closed, for the month of April to do our part to help slow the spread of COVID-19. This includes performances at our Main Stage and Black Box Theater, along with the AS220 Galleries, AS220 Industries, the AS220 Dance Studio, and Psychic Readings.

But wait, there’s hope!

Even though these spaces are closed, you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, where we're shouting out artists whose events were canceled.

Although AS220 Youth’s downtown studio will be closed, our hard-working staff have distributed “art kits” for members to take home and continue their creative work! Instructors are also working on distance-learning plans to keep members engaged remotely.

While AS220 Food & Drink will be closed for the month, our restaurant staff are currently exploring the possibility of take-out and delivery in April! If this is something that you’re interested in, let us know by emailing!

If you are looking for ways to help AS220 while our public programming is shut down, you can donate online at as220.org/support. Your donations will:

- allow AS220 to continue to pay our staff and provide healthcare benefits

-support the 60 residents who live and work in our three buildings

-ensure that our programs come back as strong as they were before

Together, we are all part of this unique and amazing creative community - we wouldn’t be here without you! Thank you for your support!

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we navigate these uncertain times. AS220 WILL be back, and we look forward to you being here with us!

Shout-out #5 - Get to know the work of Sasso & Company

From Nothing explores that idea that movement can come from nothing and everywhere all at once. It explores the relationship of burnout and vulnerability through themes of tension and release embodied in powerful partnering, athletic floorwork, and elegant release.

Shout- out #3 goes to: Connections Dance Theater:

Get to know the work of Connections Dance Theater -
The Gathering is inspired by the story of my tribe, The Massachusetts Tribe at Ponkapoag (http://massachusetttribe.org/) that talks of the land before the settlers arrived. What we now know as Eastern Massachusetts was a paradise; a place of great nature, plentiful fish, natural medicines, and many tribes cohabiting.
Connecting the idea that many tribes lived together in the same area, but tribal families were specific to particular people. Tribes worked together and shared resources for survival. In current times, the notion of living with each other and nature is becoming more critical as the environmental crises are crushing us and Indigenous people all over the world. Through a contemporary lens, The Gathering aims to focus on the beauty, positivity and intersectionality of the land and the people that lived here.

Work must have been created during COVID-19 lockdown/quarantine/social distancing. It does not have to be about COVID-19, but it can be.
We will accept work of any medium as long as it can be hosted on the internet (writing, visual art, video, sound, something we haven’t imagined yet). As always, we are particularly interested in ‘dance’ and work that deals with the body and embodiment, but are entirely open to what dance, body, and embodiment mean to each of you.

Notes from Quarantine will go live on April 1 but submissions will continue to be added as long as it feels necessary.

Shout-out #5 - Get to know the work of barbie may diewald of Barbie Diewald Choreography

Barbie Diewald's current research focuses on the idea of intimacy as a relational continuum between choreographer, dancer, and audience. She is interested in creating dances that feel hospitable-- making room for dancers' agency, personal readings and interpretations of the audience, and adapting to context. She is working on staying awake to the moments in a process where the logic or the priorities of a dance seem to shift into unexpected vectors.

Shout-out #3 today:

The Bang Group / David Parker and Jeffrey Kazin

Assembly Required -
Inspired by Steve Reich's "Clapping Music" and various Soft Shoe dances.

Assembly Required is an a capella tap dance duet which limns in sound and movement a long term relationship between two men of a certain age. The rhythms are derived from Steve Reich's "Clapping Music" and the old Soft Shoe. These performances mark Parker's return to the stage following a total knee replacement.
