Mayor Doug Farnsley designated Friday August 7 Liz Coomes Day in Prospect. Liz painted "Wild Hyacinth Trail" and kindly gifted the painting to the City after exhibiting the artwork in the inaugural Art in City Hall in 2024. The painting beautifully depicts a Spring day on the Blue Trail in Harrods Creek Park and is permanently installed in the gallery. Come to City Hall anytime during business hours and view it yourself. Thanks you, Liz Coomes, for your generosity!

Joyce Garner is a Louisville-based narrative painter whose large-scale oil paintings weave compelling stories of people and place. Her luminous, vibrant palette captivates viewers, inviting them to explore richly imagined scenes filled with emotion and meaning. Garner has exhibited extensively throughout the region and beyond and was honored as the 2021 Kentucky State Fellow by South Arts, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the visual arts. We are honored to have her as an exhibitor!

Do you ever want to talk with the artist to ask questions about the meaning of their work? Below is a conversation with the artist, Julie Hutchinson Payne. Leave a comment about what this digital collage, "Modern Times", means to you!

“Modern Times,” is the product of serendipity. Sometimes I just get going and things happen. This is one of those pictures. At this point I have hundreds (maybe thousands) of images and backgrounds that I have clipped from internet files or from my own photographs. My iconography reflects my fascination with crop circles and tales of ufos. The rest I attribute to my early childhood playing with paper dolls. Sometimes I would cut out the dolls and the dresses, then draw houses or animals on notebook paper to go with them. I had no concept of collage or even art in those days. I was just making a story in my imagination to entertain myself. Now, instead of calling it playing with dolls, I call it Surrealism. What you take away from the picture is totally up to you."

What inspired Julie Payne to create "Power"?
"Horses aren’t part of my iconography, but I admire the art of Edward Troye (1808-1874), so I started there. I digitally cut out two horses. Then I came across a print of one of Troye’s paintings with a groom and a jockey represented. Troye often added the people who worked with the thoroughbreds and sometimes even the dogs that hung around. The top hat-wearing Harry Lewis was a prominent horse trainer, and the man standing next to him, Charles, was the horse’s groom. To me these African-Americans were the power behind the horse, giving direction to the horse’s natural power."

This playful mixed media piece was created by Ann Stewart Anderson (1935-2019) (one of Louisville's premier artists) and dated 1996. Part of the Payne Fine Arts Collection, it is offered for sale at the Art in City Hall Summer Pop-Up! The show runs until August 14.
More about Ann: she was known for her exploration of what it is to be a woman in today’s world. She retired from teaching in 1991 and served as the executive director of the Kentucky Foundation for Women. She continued to paint, make prints and create mosaics in paper and ceramics.
