One thing we hear from time to time for roving customers is “oh I don’t mind a little vm in my roving, I’ll pick it out as I go.” While this sounds like less work for us, the customer after you could mind. So if you bring in wool with too much vegetable matter, it still might be rejected even if you’re ok with it. We do our best to pick and remove as much vm as possible, but sometimes it’s just too much to risk the satisfaction of the customers after you. You guys have all been great so far! We are happy to pelletize any rejected fleeces or skirtings for you. Pic of our skirting basket for attention.

Excellent example!

Why do mills ask you to skirt before dropping off your wool? If you don’t want it in your yarn take it out! While we do our best to get the bigger pieces and our machines knock out a lot of VM (vegetable matter) they can’t get it all. This was a test we did with merino wool that was not skirted with heavy VM, my mentor calls this type of yarn “seed and tweed” if you’re going for that style, great! But if not, skirt your wool 😉

Be sure to visit Polly in the animal tent at the Wool Gathering!!
