Princeton University Chapel Choir

Princeton University Chapel Choir Join the Chapel Choir! It also presents two major concerts each year. The Choir is led by Penna Rose, Director of Chapel Music, and by organist Eric Plutz.

The Princeton University Chapel Choir is a paid performance group composed of about 60 Princeton undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty, rehearsing and performing in the beautiful and historic Princeton University Chapel. From its humble beginnings singing sacred music of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, the Chapel Choir has evolved from an all-male to mixed chorus, singing everything fro

m Gregorian Chant to Dave Brubeck. In addition to Opening Exercises, Baccalaureate, and the Service of Remembrance, the Choir performs anthems and leads the congregation in Sunday Ecumenical Services throughout the year. The Choir also sponsors a range of public events in the Chapel, including the annual presentation of a silent film featuring organ accompaniment in October, (either Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) or The Phantom of the Opera (1925), both starring Lon Chaney), as well as the annual Messiah Sing in December. Admission to the Chapel Choir is by audition. Looking to audition? Check our website for details!

Last but not least we have Grace Matthews ‘22, our co-publicity chair and robe and folder czar!

“The experience of singing in the chapel defies description- it is profoundly powerful and humbling to walk down the aisle as the notes of the organ soar, voices swirl overhead, and the stained glass paints jewel-toned rainbows on the stone walls. My memories off the Chapel Choir are some my happiest - I’ve met some of my dearest friends in the choir, and it has, in many ways, become a family away from home. I am so excited to return to the choir this year, and to once again experience the magic of the chapel with old and new friends! Much ducky love to all, and see you soon!”

Thanks, Grace Matthews!!

Meet Delaney McMahon ‘22, our amazing alto section leader!

"Not to be DRAMATIC but Chapel Choir has been my favorite experience in my whole life. I remember full-on weeping the first time I sang in the chapel with everyone. It truly is a sacred space. I met some of the greatest loves of my life through Chapel Choir, and will always be grateful for the traditions, unity, and fullness of life that this community so freely gives."

We love you, Dela!

Meet our Concert Master, Sally Jane Ruybàlid ‘22!

“Originally, I joined Chapel Choir to be with my friends and colleagues and contribute musically – I love singing! Now, however, Chapel has become such a massive part of me as well as my Princeton experience. To see the reaction of the listeners at a concert to the deans who nod their heads to our music at official Princeton ceremonies to the old alumni who so joyously sing along to our hymns and Princeton traditionals…. It really puts into the perspective the impact we have on each and every spectator. I am always amazed and honored that my alto voice is a piece of the enormous volume of sound and harmony we produce!”

We appreciate you, Sally!

Meet Sean Crites ‘22, our amazing Tenor Section Leader!

“Hey folks, I’m Sean Crites, a senior from West Virginia in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department. Chapel Choir has been a home on campus over the past three years. It’s a place to sing, a place for community, and a place for growth. I hope to see you this semester!”

Amazing work, Sean!

Meet our co-president, Mary T. Davis ‘22!

“There’s nothing quite like hearing dozens of voices reverberating off the columns and arches of the chapel in unison, as the low notes played by the organ cause the stones to vibrate under your feet. It creates a magic and a sense of camaraderie among musicians that is unparalleled. The community of the chapel has been the source of many of my closest friendships throughout my time at Princeton. I am thrilled to be able to lead this group as a co-president with the lovely Chloe Horner throughout the upcoming year. Ducky love to all current and prospective members! Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.”

Thanks, Mary! We can’t wait to see what you’ll do this year!

Meet our co-president, Chloe Elizabeth Horner ‘22!

“Walking into the crypt as a nervous freshman I had no idea that the chapel would quickly become my second home on campus and a place of comfort, friendship, and belonging. I have truly met some of my closest friends and formed so many lifelong relationships in Chapel Choir, all while making beautiful music! I feel so honored to have the opportunity to serve the choir as co-president this year to give back to this wonderful community and ensure that everyone’s experience in the chapel will be as radically welcoming as mine was and continues to be. Love to all of my chapel Duckies!!”

We’re ready for a great year!

Day 2 of Meet the Choir! Today is our Soprano Section Leader, Catherine Keim!

“I love being in Chapel Choir because I can sing a wide variety of music at a high level in such a welcoming and accepting atmosphere! I'm so excited to support and encourage the soprano section because the music and the camaraderie are what make Chapel Choir so incredible. I can't wait to sing with everyone in the Chapel in just a few weeks!”

We can’t wait to see what you’ll do this year, Cat!

Meet our Publicity Chair/Bass Section Leader, Thomas Hontz ‘22!

“The Princeton University Chapel Choir has been an uplifting, inclusive, and grounding space since my first weeks on campus. Aside from singing in the most beautiful and best acoustic space on campus every week, the people of the choir have really felt like family all three years. And finally, the Chapel Choir for me has also been three years of fantastic music from moving weekly anthems backed up by organ to grand concert pieces with full string accompaniment. I can’t wait for another year of great music, loving fellowship, and joyous singing!”

Thank you, Thomas Hontz!
