Love letter to our November concerts 💌 [11/21/25 – 11/22/25]

Last month, PUO took the stage on two unforgettable nights, with Mahler’s 5th Symphony alongside Soo Yeon Lyuh’s own performance of her new composition “Celestial Dream” for haegeum and orchestra, conducted by Hannah Ishizaki! Both Soo Yeon and Hannah are grad students, and we are so proud of their hard work and to have been able to perform with them!

We are enormously grateful to every audience member who joined us on these incredibly meaningful and joy-filled nights. We have so appreciated all the stories our friends have told us about their experiences in the audience. It means the world to us to have people to share our music with! 🧡✨

Looking forward to our next concerts already? We certainly are!! Mark your calendars for 🎶 February 27 and 28 🎶 at 7:30pm in Richardson Auditorium for our annual concerto concerts showcasing winners of the PUO Concerto Competition, as well as a new work by grad student Max Vinetz!

✨Spotlight✨ on our composer and soloist, grad student Soo Yeon Lyuh, who will solo in our performance of her concerto “Celestial Dream” for haegeum and orchestra this Friday and Saturday!

Soo Yeon Lyuh is a composer, improviser, and master of the haegeum, a two-stringed Korean bowed instrument. Hailing from Daegu, South Korea by way of Princeton, New Jersey, Lyuh draws inspiration from traditional Korean music to perform a meld of improvisatory and experimental sounds.

As a composer, Lyuh asks classically trained performers to think outside the box, drawing out fresh sounds that, once understood, sound organic. Although these sounds are difficult to specify with notation, Lyuh notates a lot of them and often demonstrates the parts by joining and performing with the ensemble. Ultimately, Lyuh is all about making a bridge between cultures across difficult times, and breaking down any walls.

Come see the magic of her artistry in our concerts this weekend!
