This weekend’s season-finale concert was a memorable experience for so many reasons, most especially the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra’s gorgeous rendition of the New World Symphony. Here is a musical memory of the indelible Largo, with special kudos to Cynthia Anderson on English horn.

It’s been an amazing week at the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, all leading to our season finale tonight. Daniel Roumain’s piece for Tracy Silverman is a beautiful picture of what America has been and what it can be. Plus, works by Alex Berko, Estèvez and Dvorak. The orchestra sounds amazing and we can’t wait to see you at the Capitol Theatre.

April was an incredible musical month! Looking back on a few highlights:

YPC concerts with thousands of kids with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at the Capitol Theatre. (All WSO photos by the amazing Sadie Varlas)

A fantastic Greenberg Artists show with Shayna Steele, Brie Cassil, Emily Drennan and the artists of the York Symphony Orchestra. Thank you for welcoming us so warmly! (Photos: Bob Chadderdon).

The WSO brought down the packed house with Star Wars in concert. The orchestra, led by Rachel Stegeman, played magnificently and Wheeling is still buzzing from the show.

A few shots out and about in Wheeling. I love working with members of our youth orchestra, and meeting some of the youngest music lovers in the city!

It was a deeply meaningful week for me with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

When I was 18, I had the opportunity to perform in Rochester’s beautiful Kodak Theatre with the New York All-State Band. That experience changed my life as I found myself surrounded, for the first time, by musicians who challenged and inspired me to think about music in entirely new ways.

Twenty-two years later, it was incredibly special to return to this stage as a professional and to feel that same sense of inspiration—this time coming from the extraordinary Musicians of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

What a week it was with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. One of the most special aspects was sharing the stage with our strings to perform Tchaikovsky’s beautiful “Serenade.” Here are the joyous final moments! Thank you to everyone that joined us at the Capitol Theatre.

Next up: Star Wars!

It’s been an incredible week with My Brightest Diamond and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra! From visits with students, to our performance of Penelope, and from our rehearsals throughout the week all leading to tonight’s performance, this has been one of the most memorable projects of my time with the WSO. Please join us this evening at the Capitol Theatre for something that will be truly special.

Rehearsals are wrapped up for tonight's PENELOPE with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and My Brightest Diamond (Shara Nova).

For this performance, the WSO is going "off-campus" to the gorgeous Towngate Theatre for an intimate evening with one of the leading voices of American artistry. Come hear Shara, the gorgeous music of Sarah Kirkland Snider, and the rapturous playing of the WSO musicians. We can't wait to see you there!

Our performance of “Penelope” is coming up a week from today. It’s one of my favorite pieces of all-time because it is unique in so many ways. Here’s a video where I let you in on some of those aspects that make it so special.

Looking back ten years ago— this was one of my favorite conducting moments with Gourmet Symphony. How can you help loving Rossini? Who else is a big Rossini fan and what is your favorite piece by him?

Here’s an inside look at what is going through my mind as I work with the incredible Maxim Lando on this Prokofiev piano concerto. Take a listen as I dive into how I make decisions connecting physical gesture with musical direction… and how I stay connected with the piano soloist while working on the podium.
