Dear Kentucky

Did you know ?

Kentucky used to have a fine net metering law, but all that changed in 2019 with the passing of state Senate Bill 100. For now, nothing has changed, and LG&E and KU's net metering tariffs remain the same as before SB 100 passed. However, solar owners who installed panels after January 1, 2020 will be subject to the new rules, which include a "buy-all, sell-all" provision, under which all the generation that comes from a solar energy system will be purchased by the utility for a sub-retail rate set by the state Public Services Commission. This means solar owners in Kentucky will not be able to use any of the solar energy they create, which is not net metering under any definition.

To break this down simply.

Kentucky used to have to pay you for electricity put back into the grid from solar panels you didn’t use.

This threatened the electric monopoly and so your senate passed a bill that any solar panels built after 2020 ,the power has to be sold to these companies and not used by you at all. Also they get it cheaper than they sell you energy for.

Meaning you still have to pay their prices but they pay you pennies on the dollar for the same product.

Essentially they don’t even pay you. The KU website explians that you get a credit at a reduced rate not money A credit but they sell the excess power at their as you already know ridiculous rate from the free power they got from you.

And you have to let them install their meter to measure it. You can’t buy an approved meter and have it installed by a licensed electrician. You have to use theirs
