Here's the number that always surprises people: "Shout" only reached #47 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it first came out. Not a smash. Barely a blip. The song's real life started almost 20 years later, when "Animal House" used it in 1978 and suddenly every wedding band in America had to learn it. Ronald Isley was 18 when he recorded those first "well well well" ad-libs, reportedly inspired by watching Jackie Wilson work a crowd into a frenzy 🎶. Funny how a flop becomes a standard.

Producer Thom Bell paired these two acts after touring together for seven weeks, and when he came to Warwick with this song, she flat-out wasn't impressed and didn't think it would be a hit. So Bell tore a dollar bill in half - each of them signed their own name on their piece - and told her if the song didn't reach #1, he'd hand back his half and forget the whole thing. It hit #1 anyway, becoming the only Hot 100 chart-topper either Warwick or The Spinners ever had individually, and Warwick mailed Bell his half of the dollar back with an apology attached.

Songwriter Ivy Jo Hunter recalled recording this one so fast it almost got left unfinished - he hadn't even finished writing the lyrics while the whole band was already downstairs in the studio waiting to record. It was a rare Four Tops single not written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, credited instead to Hunter and Mickey Stevenson, and it brought in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra alongside the usual Funk Brothers for extra instrumentation. Behind the scenes, the older Isleys (Ronald, Rudolph, O'Kelly) and younger members (Ernie, Marvin, and Chris Jasper) were already clashing over money and creative direction, and by the following year the younger three had left to form their own group. Ironically, this song became their first platinum album since 1978, right as the lineup was quietly ending.

Robinson wrote this after the death of Melvin "Blue" Franklin, one of the original Temptations - a group Robinson himself had produced and written for during the mid-60s, right through hits like "My Girl." Franklin had battled rheumatoid arthritis for years, relying on cortisone to keep performing until complications from the treatment eventually took his life in 1995. Robinson wrote the song for his old friend and sang it himself at Franklin's funeral - a farewell from one Motown legend to another, off the album "Love, Smokey."
