Today we say ahéhee’ (thank you) to the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II. Starting as a development on the Choctaw code talkers of the Great War, the original 29 Marine recruits grew to over 400 throughout the duration of the war.

The use of an unwritten language (at the time), word association, and commitment of the Diné people to join the effort cemented victory for the United States, but the public wouldn’t know for another 23 years until it’s declassification in 1968. It took another 14 years for President Ronald Reagan to declare August 14th “Navajo Code Talkers Day”.

Visit the artist, Nathan Begay, at Booth MAR 817 to see this artwork and others this weekend at Santa Fe Indian Market, August 17-18th!
