Always something new to learn about the FN auto 5.

First two pictures are of our 1905 3 shot 12 gauge auto-5. Next pictures are of a 1909 3 shot 16 gauge auto-5 that belongs to a friend and fellow collector. Both show exactly the same manipulation to the magazine to limit the guns to 3 shots. Very precisely done and both magazines are straight and otherwise not altered in any way. We all suspect this was done at the FN factory. We would like to hear from anyone who has a 3 shot from this period and would love to see pictures.

Nice old all numbers matching 1923 FN auto 5 we found recently. Surprised to find there was no barrel address. Also note the drilled out stock. We're not big fans of the Cutts, but the gun looked too good to pass up.

I don't remember how much I paid for the second edition of the H.M. Shirley, Jr and Anthony Vanderlinden book "Browning Auto-5 Shotguns" (The Belgian FN Production). I do recall that I recently paid more than $80.00 for the updated third edition. On page 128 of the second edition and page 194 of the third edition, serial numbered parts are discussed. No mention is made in either book of the full serial number being present on the trigger group. Pictured are 1963 trigger group, 1909 16 gauge trigger group and 1929 12 gauge trigger group. Trigger group serial numbers on the lower tang were begun in 1903. Every auto-5 I have has this feature. This should have been corrected in the Third Edition.

The new edition (third) of the Shirley / Vanderlinden Browning Auto-5 Shotguns. 'The Belgian FN Production' has been published. The incorrect information about the safeties has not been corrected. This was an egregious error in the second edition and really should have been corrected. Front of trigger guard safety without a latching device was used by FN from 1904 thru 1908 and should have been included in the third edition.
