The last stop of the Trip to Greece was St. Dionysios Greek Orthodox Christian Church in Overland Park. It was a great opportunity to experience the central and important worship service in the Greek Orthodox Church and hear about its history, icons, theology, etc.

Now we’ve finished all the trips for this year. Thank you for your interest and participation. We’ll continue on this journey toward diverse cultures of our neighbors next year. Stay tuned!

We enjoyed the Greek vibe and food at Tasso’s Greek Restaurant in Kansas City last Saturday. It was the time full of joy and laughter.

We’ll wrap up the Trip to Greece by visiting the Greek Orthodox Church in Overland Park this Thursday. We’ll attend the Divine Liturgy at 6:30 p.m. and then take a moment to converse with the Priest at around 7:45 p.m. For your information, it is the custom for the faithful to stand for the majority of the worship for Greek Orthodox church services. However, visitors are welcome to sit if they find the amount of standing too challenging. See you Thursday.

We gathered at Asbury Parlor last Saturday for our Week 2 trip. Sara Coe and David Breneman gave a wonderful presentation about their trip to Greece in December 2024. After that, we watched the famous romantic comedy, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002),” which humorously portrays second-generation immigrant experiences and intercultural relationships.

The Trip to Greece Week 3 will be an exploration of the Greek culture through food. We’ll meet on Saturday, Sep. 20 at 11:30 am at Tasso's in Kansas City, where we can taste traditional Greek cuisine.

We enjoyed the KC Greek Fest together last weekend. It was a fun opportunity to taste Greek food and listen to Greek music. Also, the tour of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Kansas City gave us a fascinating glimpse into the Orthodox Christian faith and liturgy, which will be helpful for us to understand what's going on during the Divine Liturgy we'll be attending at St. Dionysios Greek Orthodox Church in Overland Park in late September.

The Trip to Greece Week 2 will feature the Greece Trip presentation by Sara Coe and David Breneman and the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002 / PG / 1h 35m)." We’ll meet on Saturday, Sep. 13 at 10:30 am at Asbury Parlor. Everyone is welcome.

Last Sunday, five Asbury members and Pastor Daekyung got an opportunity to talk about what they experienced and learned during their trip to Alaska. Check out the video.

It was truly an amazing opportunity for all the thirteen participants to recognize and appreciate the presence and gifts of our neighbors in Anchorage, AK, by exploring the Alaskan cultures and nature, eating at local restaurants, engaging in service projects, and serving Alaska Natives. Thank you all so much for your prayers and support.

Sunday, August 3
Today was our last day in Alaska and we spent it at The Church of the Nations assisting with their ministry to the unhoused people of Anchorage.

Our group split into teams this morning and did chores around the church. Some cleaned, some did laundry and some of us worked on preparing food for a meal we would serve after church. We cooked 50lbs of ground beef and 20 pounds of spaghetti noodles plus we put together a salad to feed 120 people!

The afternoon church service was full of music and praise. Our very own Pastor Daekyung gave the sermon about how we are all unique and beautiful gifts from God.

After serving the meal, we enjoyed dinner with the TCOTN church staff and then a small group from our team accompanied Pastor Daniel to the Anchorage Correctional Complex for a church service with a group of inmates in the minimum security section.

We wrapped up the evening sharing our blessings from the week with Pastor Daniel and his family and presented them with some gifts we brought from Kansas.

We leave very early tomorrow morning with our hearts and minds full of the memories we made in Alaska.
