BMA Welcomes Guest Artist Catherine Worthington.
“As I explore the medium of textile painting I am often discovering the balance between abstraction and representation. Inspired by many walks in the woods, sailing on the coast or taking in the beauty of nature’s creations, I am compelled to create and capture its’ color, texture and charm.”

“My textile art quilts are interpretations of real places and I hope to capture the attention of the viewer by creating a feeling or familiar place to connect with.”

I am a mixed media textile artist. I make textile “Art Quilts” for the wall. Working with textile paints on cloth I create colorful and highly textured, one of a kind patterned fabrics using a variety of surface design techniques. My process allows me to create a unique palette of fabrics to work with. For me knowing that I will be cutting up the pieces gives me the freedom to play and makes the process joyful. I use methods of collage to assemble my compositions, cutting and piecing the fabrics I have created and then stitch the layers together. The combination adds line and gives depth and dimension.

BMA welcomes back member Sarah Bartlett who is a contemporary visual artist with a natural affinity for Abstract Expressionism. Her home and studio are surrounded by the beautiful whispering pines of Pownal, Maine. Fascinated by a variety of mediums, her multi-layered approach to painting gathers inspiration from her extensive studies in printmaking and encaustics. Sarah’s work is informed by the dynamic forces found in nature and she utilizes the landscape as a springboard to further explore. “My abstract landscape paintings are lyrical interpretations of Sacred Ground that are guided from within. The essence of my work embodies the transformative energy of Color and Light.”

BMA welcome's member artist Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest.
"My photography is about places and time. It is about the experience of having been there. The place could be anywhere, close to home or far away when I travel. To bring home the essence of a place, to report what went on during that single moment when I pressed the shutter. Classifying my style as mostly Street/Documentary I feel it eases easily into my 2 1/4 format portraiture. And it is hard for an artist to work in a straight line so every once in a while I venture into different territory, like the exploration of the human form or the sculptured form or the relationship between them, or the landscape and sometimes the relationship of the human form and the landscape. Or into different photographic techniques such as polaroid transfers and doing strange things with that such as using these into fabricated imagery such as sequences or mosaics.

Nowadays, especially since the rise of digital technology, photography becomes even more interesting. There are no limits but your own imagination. And although digital photography is slowly becoming a larger part of my toolbox I still like the original smell of the darkroom.

During my many years in photography I have found the whole spectrum of emotions. Joy, hate, sadness, love, war and peace. Photographs are small pieces in time. I take them home and have ownership. They are particles of history and a record of life on earth."

Looking forward to the annual show, just a week away.
We welcome returning guest artist, Jody Meredith, again this year.
"The first boiled wool item I saw was a pair of light gray, embroidered mittens from Norway. They were beautiful, thick, and warm. They inspired me to buy yarn immediately and start knitting. This was over 40 years ago, and my fascination with boiled wool has continued to develop into the work you see here today."

"I love the feel, the warmth and the look of this material, and taught myself to make it by using a hand powered knitting machine. Different fibers produce fabrics with different characteristics – merino for fine scarves and shawls, shetland for hard wearing vests, alpaca for soft, cozy hats. For the past 20 years I have been refining this process and learning new ways to create distinctive garments meant to last a lifetime."
