From the hills to the home — handmade black walnut bar stools by ole Rooster Woodworking.

These custom stools were built from beautiful Appalachian black walnut, shaped with a gentle saddle seat and finished to let that rich grain do the talking. Strong, simple, and made the old-fashioned way — one cut, one joint, one careful pass at a time.

There’s just something about walnut that feels like home: warm as a woodstove, solid as a mountain ridge, and full of character you can’t fake.

Built for gathering, made to last.

This one is officially wrapped up!

Appalachian workmanship is about more than building something that looks good on day one. It is about doing the job the right way, with solid materials, careful cuts, and pride in every board.

A couple weeks back, we built this deck to give the home a solid, usable outdoor space tucked right into the shade of the hills. Then we came back and finished the transformation by removing two windows and installing a patio door, opening the house up to the deck the way it should have been all along.

From the first board going down to the final door install, this project was about creating a space that feels natural, practical, and built to last.

At ole Rooster Woodworking, we bring that Appalachian work ethic to every job: honest craftsmanship, dependable construction, and respect for the home we are working on.

Ready to open up your home and make your outdoor space more usable? Give ole Rooster Woodworking a call.

Projects are coming along in the ole Rooster Woodworking shop, and we’re proud to keep that Appalachian craftsmanship alive one piece at a time.

This week we’ve had a few special builds on the bench: an oak and birch noodle board with beautiful natural contrast, a set of black walnut stools with plenty of character, and a custom shelf unit we recently installed for a clean, built-in look.

Every board, joint, and finish tells a little story — shaped by hand, built with care, and made to last.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support local handmade work. More sawdust, more progress, and more finished pieces coming soon.

We’re proud to share this custom black walnut screen door and matching dining table built for a beautiful riverside back deck. Every board was carefully selected, every detail handcrafted, and every piece made to last for generations — just the way it ought to be.

From morning coffee overlooking the river to family suppers at sunset, this set was built to bring folks together and make memories that matter.

A special thank you to Judy G. Huddleston for trusting Ole Rooster Woodworking to craft these custom pieces for her home. We’re grateful for the opportunity to build something meaningful that’ll be enjoyed for years to come.

At Ole Rooster Woodworking, we still believe in honest work, solid wood, and Appalachian craftsmanship done right.

Custom made. Built by hand. Rooted in tradition. 🐓

Well now… there ain’t nothin’ quite like honest work done by hand, same way it’s been done in these hills for generations. 🐓

We’ve been spendin’ our days etchin’ slate, turnin’ plain stone into somethin’ worth passin’ down — names of loved ones, places that mean somethin’, and designs that tell a story all their own.

Each piece is made slow and careful, right here at home, the way it oughta be. No rushin’, no shortcuts — just good, honest craft.

If you’ve got somethin’ in mind you’d like to see brought to life, we’d be mighty proud to make it for ya. Send us a message and let’s put your story on stone.

Much obliged, from our home to yours 🤎

Sometimes you don’t find the right piece… you build it.

Customer had the space, told us the need—a dresser that actually fits—and instead of settling for something close, we went back to an Appalachian way of thinking: use what you have, build what you need, and make it last.

This one came together with a blend of birch and oak, letting the contrast do the talking. The lighter birch keeps it bright and clean, while the oak brings in that strength and depth that feels right at home in the mountains.

No shortcuts, no factory lines—just solid wood, careful cuts, and a piece that’s made to belong exactly where it sits.

There’s something different about furniture when it’s built with intention. It’s not just filling a space… it becomes part of it.

There’s something special about starting with a raw slab of wood and watching it come to life. 🌳

This black walnut slab has been sitting patiently, full of character, grain, and natural beauty—just waiting for its moment. Now, we’re turning it into a one-of-a-kind deck table that’ll be the centerpiece of countless gatherings.

From milling and flattening, to sanding it smooth and bringing out those rich, dark tones… every step is about respecting the wood and letting its story shine through. We’re keeping as much of the natural edge as possible, because that’s where the magic lives.

Next up: sealing, finishing, and adding a solid base to match its strength and style.

Can’t wait to show you the final result—this one’s going to be something special. 🔥
