For nearly 20 years, sea lion Baby brought joy to guests and those fortunate enough to know her.
Born in Germany and later becoming a cherished member of the Columbus Zoo family, Baby was known for her gentle nature, patient spirit, and the strong relationships she built with both her animal companions and the people who cared for her. She loved spending time with her best friend, Ayla, and on sunny afternoons, guests could often find her stretched out on the Central Pool deck, enjoying a nap in the breeze.
Baby was a favorite among her Animal Care team. Whether she was learning a new behavior, posing for photos, or simply spending time with her keepers, she seemed happiest when she was with the people she trusted. Her calm and consistent personality made her an incredible ambassador for her species and often the first sea lion new staff members learned to work alongside.
In recent weeks, Baby had been receiving veterinary care following corneal ulcer treatment. During her recovery, Baby began showing changes in her appetite and behavior that prompted additional medical evaluation and treatment. Despite the dedicated efforts of her Animal Care and Conservation Medicine teams, she experienced unexpected complications and passed away. Following her passing, veterinary findings revealed significant inflammation affecting her kidneys and intestines, along with internal bleeding. These underlying conditions help explain the sudden decline in her health.
"Baby was a very special animal to us. Her gentle soul holds a very special place in our hearts, and we will forever be grateful for the time we had with her," shared her Care team. "She was such a perfect girl and often was the first sea lion that new staff members would learn to work with. She was patient, consistent, and just a joy to work with. Her loss is tremendous, and we miss her profoundly."
The bond between animals and the people who care for them is built over years of trust, patience, and shared experiences. As we celebrate Baby's life, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Animal Care and Conservation Medicine teams who loved her and provided exceptional care throughout her life. We know her absence will be felt deeply, and we are holding her care team close as they navigate this loss.
While our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the years we shared with Baby and for the opportunity to introduce her to millions of guests.
