There’s been a BEAR-Y big change in our Polar Frontier region—Brown bears, Brutus and Buckeye, and polar bears, Lee and Aurora, are swapping habitats!

On Tuesday, our polar bears successfully explored the habitat typically used by our brown bears. And, this morning, the brown bears got their chance to discover the polar bears’ habitat! This move is a trial for the Animal Care team to see if the bear species can be rotated on a regular basis to provide new experiences, mental stimulation, and enrichment opportunities.

To make the swap possible, our Animal Care team temporarily moved each bear species behind the scenes while the other species explored their new surroundings. The team closely monitored the bears throughout the experience, and it’s been a success!

Both habitats were built to polar bear standards and are located right next to each other in Polar Frontier, so guests won't have to go far to find either species. On your next visit, keep an eye out. You may spot one of our bears enjoying a whole new view of the neighborhood!

For nearly 20 years, sea lion Baby brought joy to guests and those fortunate enough to know her.

Born in Germany and later becoming a cherished member of the Columbus Zoo family, Baby was known for her gentle nature, patient spirit, and the strong relationships she built with both her animal companions and the people who cared for her. She loved spending time with her best friend, Ayla, and on sunny afternoons, guests could often find her stretched out on the Central Pool deck, enjoying a nap in the breeze.

Baby was a favorite among her Animal Care team. Whether she was learning a new behavior, posing for photos, or simply spending time with her keepers, she seemed happiest when she was with the people she trusted. Her calm and consistent personality made her an incredible ambassador for her species and often the first sea lion new staff members learned to work alongside.

In recent weeks, Baby had been receiving veterinary care following corneal ulcer treatment. During her recovery, Baby began showing changes in her appetite and behavior that prompted additional medical evaluation and treatment. Despite the dedicated efforts of her Animal Care and Conservation Medicine teams, she experienced unexpected complications and passed away. Following her passing, veterinary findings revealed significant inflammation affecting her kidneys and intestines, along with internal bleeding. These underlying conditions help explain the sudden decline in her health.

"Baby was a very special animal to us. Her gentle soul holds a very special place in our hearts, and we will forever be grateful for the time we had with her," shared her Care team. "She was such a perfect girl and often was the first sea lion that new staff members would learn to work with. She was patient, consistent, and just a joy to work with. Her loss is tremendous, and we miss her profoundly."

The bond between animals and the people who care for them is built over years of trust, patience, and shared experiences. As we celebrate Baby's life, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Animal Care and Conservation Medicine teams who loved her and provided exceptional care throughout her life. We know her absence will be felt deeply, and we are holding her care team close as they navigate this loss.

While our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the years we shared with Baby and for the opportunity to introduce her to millions of guests.

June marks the one-year anniversary of North America Trek! And while you may walk into the region originally amazed by its newly designed habitats, we hope you leave the region amazed and inspired by the animal care stories that lie within it.

In North America Trek, over 70 percent of the individuals who call the region home actually started their lives in the wild. Many of these individuals were either orphaned, injured, or displaced by natural disasters and have come to the Columbus Zoo to get a second chance at life.

When you donate to the Columbus Zoo, your support helps provide specialized care for animals in need, strengthens partnerships with wildlife organizations across the country, and supports conservation efforts that protect wildlife for future generations. To learn more about these individuals’ stories and to help support our dedicated care, please visit https://www.columbuszoo.org/givewildly.

Thank you for supporting the care and conservation efforts that make stories like these possible.

Columbus Zoo guests of every age love meeting our lorikeets!

Head to Lorikeet Aviary, where you can hand-feed some of our brightest feathered residents and learn a little something about the flock along the way: https://www.columbuszoo.org/animal-experience/lorikeet-aviary

Did you know several same-sex lorikeet pairs call the Columbus Zoo home? These birds form strong bonds, claim nest boxes together, and have even been known to incubate eggs as a pair. Same-sex partnerships have been documented in many bird species, both in the wild and in professional care, where pairs have even helped raise abandoned or orphaned young.

All month, our Animal Care team is treating the flock to special Pride-themed enrichment in the aviary. Stop by, say hello, and experience one of the Zoo's most colorful traditions for yourself!
