🌙🐚 We spotted the moon snail at SEA Discovery Center!
The moon snail has a moon-like shell and lives mostly under the sand. You might spot its eggs as a sandy ring on the beach 👀Fun fact: moon snails drill perfect little holes into clam shells to reach their meal! 😲
Next time you visit the beach, or SEA, keep an eye out… you never know what’s hiding just beneath the surface!

SEA is open Friday and Saturday, 11am-4pm and Sunday Noon-3pm. Admission by donation.

Seal pup season is here in Port of Poulsbo Marina! 🦭

Each spring and summer, harbor seal mothers return to familiar rookery sites to give birth and nurse their pups — and Liberty Bay is one of those important places. Because SEA Discovery Center is located right along this rookery area, we often see some of the youngest and most vulnerable harbor seal pups of the season.

That means we all need to be extra cautious.

Harbor seal pups are born in the Pacific Northwest from May through August. It is normal to see a pup resting alone onshore, on docks, or near the marina. A pup that appears to be alone has not necessarily been abandoned. Mothers may wait to return to pups until the area is quiet and free of people, dogs, and boat activity.

Harbor seals — and all marine mammals — are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Feeding, touching, harassing, moving, or picking up a seal pup can harm the animal and may result in fines or other penalties.

Please help us protect the pups born here by following these guidelines:
👐 Give seals space. Stay at least 100 yards away whenever possible, and never approach a pup for a closer look or photo.
🐕 Keep dogs leashed and far away. Even a curious dog can seriously stress or injure a pup.
🚫 Do not touch, feed, move, or pour water on a seal pup. They are wild animals and need to be left alone.
📞 Report injured, dead, or entangled marine mammals to the West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network at 1-866-767-6114.
🚨 If you see someone harassing a seal, call 1-800-853-1964.
💙 Trust your local Stranding Network partners. Their response decisions are based on what gives the animal the best chance of survival.

We are so lucky to share Liberty Bay with these incredible animals. By giving harbor seal moms and pups the quiet, space, and patience they need, we can help the youngest pups born here thrive in the wild.

Please share this post and help us spread the word during seal pup season.

Look from a distance, keep dogs away, and let wild pups stay wild. 🦭💙

Please Be Whale Wise this weekend if you are on the water.

If you're planning to spend time on the water this Memorial Day weekend, you can help keep orcas in the game by keeping an eye out and staying 1,000 yards away from endangered Southern Resident killer whales.

Summer is the busiest time of the year in Puget Sound and the Salish Sea, and giving these orcas the space they need to feed, hunt, and nurture their young is critical to their continued survival. The 1,000-yard distance requirement went into effect in Washington last year, and Canada recently announced new vessel management measures to align with Washington's laws, requiring boaters to stay 1,000 meters away from SRKW north of the border as well. Visit Be Whale Wise for more information about the regulations for the U.S. and Canada.

With the World Cup arriving in Seattle and Vancouver later this summer, it's especially important to set the example for new or visiting boaters.
