Been doing drawings of compositional ideas for painting. In this case, a scourging scene and Agony in the Garden. How does one organize space in a composition? There are many solutions, but this is a direction that I have found enjoyable: alternating lights and darks to create a sense of space, but also being aware of how the lights and darks work abstractly on the page (one way of understanding this is you can turn the page upside down and still have some internal logic, though it does not necessary mean it works upside down as there is also the subject matter.) the two aspects, abstract and illustrative, run into each other and inform each other. This is the key to understand great painting.
