This past week I helped install Museum of Fishes & Greens, a wonderful exhibition of drawings and hand-dyed saris made by women from the Sundarbans region of India.
The opening reception is Friday, May 22, 4-7pm at Scenic Hudson’s River Center, Long Dock Park, Beacon, NY.
Presented by Museum of Fishes & Greens is a multimedia collaboration by Food Studio Collective, a diverse group of artists, scholars, filmmakers, curators based in Kolkata & Shantiniketan, and women from fishing and farming communities in the Sundarbans, West Bengal, where climate change is not a distant future but a lived, recurring reality.
Through an exchange of dialogue on how climate is impacting food sources in the Sundarbans, women produced batik pattern designs for saris, handmade paper from plants, and hand crafted books of data, keepsakes, drawings, recipes, and memories from the Sundarbans. Food Studio made two films that document the project, the landscape, and the women, who speak to how they navigate ecological precarity while sustaining households, markets, and biodiversity.
