Beneath the Sky and Dirt

Beneath the Sky and Dirt Nature media and weird randomness. I focus on the history beneath the sky and dirt. The rest is my ego trying to be remembered for at least one more generation.

This was the first cemetery stop from our travels in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (D Dean 06/13/2026). As my wife and son were with me this day, they remained occupied at this amazing wine bar called Lampeter Corner. I highly recommend enjoying some of the wine after a cemetery visit as I did, and a fresh Lemon cream that was served in the hollowed half of the fruit. The cemetery itself is only a minute walk from the parking lot of the wine bar on Lampeter Rd.

A face holding back excitement for a photograph opportunity and a little of pride from knowing his parents want to share his image with family and friends. It reminds me of my son when he got his school photos.

Taking the scenic route back from a day at Dutch Wonderland and a big meal at Dienner’s Country Restaurant (D Dean 06/13/2026), we stopped at two historic graveyards in Pennsylvania. This graveyard was highlighted with Peach Bottom slate headstones. The Rock Springs Baptist Church was built in 1808 and uses the same slate on the roof, along with schist and serpentine fieldstone for the rest of the structure.

Happy Flag Day! This is one of my favorite recent acquired photographs. It appears to be an early 20th century image with a group of people in a medium sized tent. The small flag is front, center, and bottom between the legs of a child whose facial expression alludes to the joy he is having playing a tambourine. There is a girl also playing what appears to be a banjo. In the background is a building or house. No further information at this time. I just think this is one of the cool photos.

Taking a Sunday drive allotted time for one graveyard (D Dean 06/07/2026). However, this area holds a few grave treasures which will be on my checklist to visit in the future. As far as a non cemetery/graveyard/ burial site, we picked up some excellent ice cream down the road. I will make a separate post for the must-try location if you tour a few resting places in Woodbine.

I am starting a little side project (not that I have enough on my plate), where I scan old photos that don’t have much context anymore and sell them. My goal is to scan, save, and share as much as I can while making enough to make it worthwhile. I will continue posting here as usual of cemeteries and history. The photos where I have enough information to “solve” or provide interesting tidbits about will also remain here. Photos that may be sold or are just fun standalone images that may remain a mystery will be on this other page. Feel free to follow and share.

It was such a nice day (05/30/2026) that we wanted to get out of the house before going to my son’s soccer game. A nice walk was in order and there was enough time for a local stop. We decided to walk the grounds at the Hampton Mansion, a National Historic Site. Of course, a stroll to the Ridgley burial ground is in order along with paying respects to the unknown area of the enslaved burials. There is also an area where the pets rest.

This was the last stop on my trip last Sunday (D Dean 05/24/2026). It was quite at this time of day and most places were closed early on Sunday. Burials appear to be from 1847 until 1965.
