Art 'Round Town at New Hampshire Art Association

This July, New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) is thrilled to present On Paper, a juried exhibition celebrating the versatility, creativity, and transformative potential of paper as both a medium and a material. Artists from across New England were invited to experiment, take risks, and explore the many possibilities paper offers, resulting in a collection of innovative and boundary-pushing works.

The exhibition features artwork created on or of paper, including drawing, painting, folded paper, sculptural paper works, papier-mâché, watercolor, printmaking, cut paper, artist books, cyanotypes, photogravures, and other alternative photographic processes in which paper plays a central role. Together, these works demonstrate the remarkable creativity that can emerge from one of the world's most familiar and accessible materials.

Juried by Lisa Barthelson, On Paper showcases both emerging and established artists whose work expands the possibilities of paper-based art. From delicate collages and etched photographs to bold sculptures and paintings depicting paper itself, the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider paper not simply as a surface, but as a powerful artistic medium capable of conveying texture, form, memory, and meaning.

On Paper will be on view at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery, 136 State Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801, from July 1 through July 26, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 3, from 5:00–8:00 pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 5 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm.

Portsmouth is a city in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, in the United States. It is the only city in the county, but only the fourth-largest community, with a population of 21,233 at the 2010 census. As of 2016 the estimated population was 21,485. A historic seaport and popular summer tourist destination, Portsmouth was the home of the Strategic Air Command's Pease Air Force Base, later converted to Portsmouth International Airport at Pease with limited commercial air service.

We hadn't been out to Art 'Round Town in a while, and man, are we glad we ventured out last night (June 5, 2026).

A LOT of you hit the circuit.

And you're kind. And curious. And thankful.

That's one of the things we love most about Portsmouth's First Friday gallery walk. It's not just about the art—it's about the people who come out to experience it.

We loved saying hi to Amanda, Emily, and Carol at the New Hampshire Art Association (and checking out both the featured exhibits and the bathroom art exhibit, of course).

Robin at Thornhill Art Gallery has some very exciting exhibits planned (and Folia by and Amy Vander Els felt therapeutic!) We'll be back for "Maximum Presence: A Juried Large Works Show," July 3-25. (Call for entries is now!)

"It's popping," according to Liz over at Todd Bonita Gallery - Portsmouth, NH, and she wasn't wrong. We still managed to spend some time with a Stan Moeller Art Studio piece or two and enjoy 'Dylan on Sax' outside on Ceres Street.

At Ceres Gallery, we snagged a tasty ham-and-cheese croissant and then had to practically drag husband away to hit the next stop.

And Wendy was as fun to talk to as ever at Kennedy Gallery and Custom Framing. Aforementioned husband was especially enamored with Double Vision, the collaboration between photographer John Dunkle and painter Lisayoungart. I couldn't keep my eye's off Dan Jacavanco's Calder-inspired mobiles peppered across the ceiling.

We simply need to do some stamina training if we're ever going to hit all the galleries in one night.

Maybe we'll have better luck when we start our route backward on Friday, July 3.

Until then, thanks to all the artists, gallery owners, musicians, volunteers, and art lovers who make Art 'Round Town one of Portsmouth's coolest monthly traditions. 🎨❤️
