This workshop explores a largely forgotten tradition of Western astrology, which
originated in antiquity yet survived uninterrupted into the 20th century. The New Age revival of
astrology and the “physics envy” of modern occultism has pushed this ancient current to the
margin, but it is a fully-fledged and complete system in its own right — in some ways deeply
mathematical and erudite, in others simple, astute, and easily operated. Dozens, probably
hundreds, of separate methods are extant in manuscripts and early printed manuals, but they
revolve around basic themes. Given names are converted to numbers, added together with values
from astrological tables, and divided according to the age of the moon. The remainder is found in
a sphere diagram. This method calculates ruling planets and natal sign, whether a sick person
will die, if a husband or wife will outlive the other, or practically any given question. It is
self-contained and obviates the need for complex observation or instruments, using the
astrological basis underlying the Gregorian calendar.

Trace Fleeman Garcia is a poet-archaeologist and interdisciplinary scholar from the San
Joaquin Valley of California. Outside of academic venues, his writing has previously appeared in
