What can Mainers expect during tomorrow's partial solar eclipse? A UMaine expert explains:

☀️ When can Mainers see the eclipse?
In the greater Bangor area, viewers will see the partial eclipse between 12:54 and 2:49 p.m., according to Shawn Laatsch of the University of Maine’s Versant Power Astronomy Center.

🔭 Where can you watch it?
The Versant Power Astronomy Center will welcome members of the public to view the eclipse for free from the Historic Clark Telescope Observatory from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 12.

👓 How can you watch safely?
“You should never look directly at the sun for more than a second or two without protection,” Laatsch said. “Solar eclipse glasses and solar filters block out 99% of the sun rays.”

📅 What if you miss it?
The next partial solar eclipse in Maine will occur in 2045, Laatsch said. The next total solar eclipse visible in Maine will occur on May 1, 2079.

“People with any interest in astronomy will enjoy seeing this partial solar eclipse, especially if they can’t travel across the world to see the total solar eclipse,” Laatsch said.

Murals, shop talks, lightning talks, a couple of breweries, and more good conversations than I can count. Design Fest, done.

I walked into this week job-hunting and a little worn down, not expecting much. I’m walking out with a full notebook, a stack of new people I’m lucky to know, and the reminder that the fix for feeling stuck was never a new tool. It’s a room full of people who make things.

Special thanks to Emily Foran and the rest of the team at AIGA Maine, who all poured an unreasonable amount of care into pulling this whole week off. It shows. That kind of thing never happens by accident, and it never happens without people doing the quiet work behind it.

To every speaker, host, and stranger who turned into a friend this week, thank you. Portland’s creative community is the real thing. Glad to be in it.

Now, back to hunting for fun.

Design On Draft at Belleflower Brewing Company tonight was exactly the kind of hang this whole week’s been building toward. Abbie Cates (Abbie Cates) and Nicole Laplante (Nala Plant Design Studio) both got up and absolutely killed it, honest, sharp, no fluff. The kind of talks that send you home with a notebook full of things you want to go try tomorrow.

That’s the thing about a room like this. You walk in tired and walk out fired up. Doesn’t happen everywhere.

Thanks to AIGA Maine and Belleflower Brewing Company for the night. One more day of Design Fest to go. Let’s finish it right.

No real stage, just designers, makers, students, and whoever else wanders in, plus a couple of lightning talks from Abbie Cates (Abbie Cates) and Nicole Laplante (Nala Plant Design Studio). This is the part of the week where you actually get to stand around and talk to the community instead of just watching it from a chair.
