**Starts Friday, September 11th**

The 2nd film in our September Thrillers series is ready to blow your mind. David Cronenberg’s SCANNERS (1981) hits our Big Screen!! Starring Michael Ironside (TOTAL RECALL, FREE W***Y) as the terrifying Darryl Revok. SCANNERS is a head-exploding dose of psychic warfare, body horror, and pure Cronenberg weirdness. Come lose your mind with us!

Back of the box:
With Scanners, David Cronenberg plunges us into one of his most terrifying and thrilling sci-fi worlds. After a man with extraordinary—and frighteningly destructive—telepathic abilities is nabbed by agents from a mysterious rogue corporation, he discovers he is far from the only possessor of such strange powers, and that some of the other “scanners” have their minds set on world domination, while others are trying to stop them. A trademark Cronenberg combination of the visceral and the cerebral, this phenomenally gruesome and provocative film about the expanses and limits of the human mind was the Canadian director’s breakout hit in the United States.

**Starts Friday, September 4th**

The effortlessly sleek French New Wave classic BREATHLESS (1960) breezes onto our Big Screen this September! Jean-Luc Godard’s stylish, rule-breaking romance follows a reckless young criminal and the American woman caught in his orbit through the streets of Paris. Don’t miss the film that helped change cinema forever. All showtimes are up on our website now!

Back of the box:
There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. Jean-Luc Godard burst onto the film scene in 1960 with this jazzy, free-form, and sexy homage to the American film genres that inspired him as a writer for Cahiers du cinéma. With its lack of polish, surplus of attitude, anything-goes crime narrative, and effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, Breathless helped launch the French New Wave and ensured that cinema would never be the same.

**Starts Friday, September 4th**

Gus Van Sant’s wickedly funny satire TO DIE FOR (1995) hits our Big Screen this September! Nicole Kidman is unforgettable as Suzanne Stone, an aspiring TV personality whose hunger for fame knows absolutely no limits. Dark yet stylish, don’t miss this thriller about ambition, obsession, and the pursuit of celebrity. All showtimes are up on our website now!

Back of the box:
The all-American obsession with celebrity turns monstrous in this deliciously subversive (and disturbingly prescient) satire of our television-mediated, true-crime-obsessed age. In a career breakthrough, Nicole Kidman delivers a diabolical deconstruction of the girl next door as a local TV weather reporter whose perfectly perky facade belies a murderous heart, as her ruthless pursuit of fame ensnares three disaffected teens in a sordid, tabloid-ready scandal. Deftly deploying shifting perspectives, faux-documentary interviews, and a supporting cast featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, and Casey Affleck, director Gus Van Sant adds provocative layers of meaning to this darkly funny examination of suburban sociopathy.

The Dead have waited...the day has come. George A. Romero’s achingly underplayed cult-classic DAY OF THE DEAD shambles onto Academy screens starting on Friday, September 4th!

The film features some of makeup maestro Tom Savini’s greatest (and goriest) effects work, as well as a fantastic synth-driven score by John Harrison, and perhaps the ultimate show-stealing performance by Sherman Howard as the intelligent zombie “Bub.”

This one is a real crowd-pleaser the whole way through, leading all the way up to that absolute *chef’s kiss* of an ending. Don’t wait up, grab your tix now at academytheaterpdx.com before the Dead grab you!!!

Back of the Box:
The “walking dead” have taken over the world. Only a small band of scientists and soldiers are known to remain, and they have taken refuge in an underground missile silo. The only hope for survival of the human race hinges on discovering a way to either control the walking dead or get the dead back into their graves for good - but with one horrific last-ditch battle for life with thousands of the undead, the result may be the darkest day of horror the world has ever known…

**Starts Friday September 11th**

This September… your angel of death awaits… as fan-favorite BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM (1993) lurks onto our big screen!

A theatrical version of the celebrated 90s TV show BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, don’t miss this rarely screened triumph of animation featuring the voices of Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Corvette Summer), Kevin Conroy, Stacy Keach (Road Games) & a brooding score from Shirley Walker.

Back of the Box:
When a woman from Bruce Wayne’s past, Andrea Beaumont, comes back into his life, Bruce questions whether he should continue protecting Gotham City as Batman. But his introspection is short-lived when the city’s most notorious crime bosses are killed and the Caped Crusader is blamed for their murders. The Dark Knight sets out to clear his name, revealing a new masked vigilante: The Phantasm. Based on the hit television show Batman: The Animated Series and featuring Warner Bros.’ first-ever use of computer-generated animation, this film noir-inspired original story continues the Batman legacy with a dark mystery involving The Phantasm and Batman’s infamous archrival, The Joker.

Pictureshow Collections Presents: THE CABLE GUY (1996) – 30th Anniversary!

On Tuesday, September 22nd at 7:00 pm, Pictureshow Collections – Portland’s roaming pop-up vendor of cinematic physical media – is partnering with the mighty Academy Theater for a 30th anniversary celebration of THE CABLE GUY (1996)!

A pre-digital dark comedy of obsession and friendship-gone-wrong, THE CABLE GUY stars Matthew Broderick as Steven, a newly single dude just trying to score some free movie channels, and Jim Carrey as Chip, a lonely cable tech who hooks Steven up, but then won’t leave him alone. Featuring a who’s who of ‘90s comedy, this underrated gem directed by Ben Stiller deserves a fresh viewing for its manic laughs and weirdly prescient vision of how technology increasingly enables us to seriously f**k with each other.

Get there early for a pre-show market from 5:30 – 7:00 pm with awesome vendors, featuring VHS tapes, VCRs, Blu-rays, shirts, jewelry, movie posters and more. We’ll also be raffling off copies of THE CABLE GUY on Blu-ray, VHS and LaserDisc before the movie begins, so some lucky attendees will never have to go without cable in their lives.
Stay tuned to this channel and we’ll see you there!
