It’s been a great week for the Gregory Portland High School Choir! 3 Varsity Choirs (Treble, Tenor/Bass, and Mixed) performed at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation at Flour Bluff High School and all of them earned Sweepstakes! Superior Ratings in both Concert and Sight Reading!

We’re so very proud of these groups and their dedication to each other to master the art of Choral musicianship. Special thanks to Mrs. Rokohl, our Middle School Choir Director, Mrs. Casas our Fine Arts Secretary, Mr. Villarreal our Collaborative Artist, and Mr. Lopez our Director for dedicating their time to our wonderful Choral Program. Thank you all for the beautiful music!

Our singing wildcats are at it again! We made an appearance singing the national anthem at the ribbon cutting of our districts new Technology, Maintenance, Transportation and Family Resource Center on Wednesday, March 4th. We’re so happy to support the district that supports us! Great opportunity to meet our community and school leaders in the process! GPISD is growing and becoming more innovative by the day! Soon we will be in our new Fine Arts wing for the 2026-2027 school year.

Congratulations to Elena Perez on her concert with the TMEA LSC All State Treble Choir. The ensemble was under the direction of Allyssa Jones, Director of Vocal Ensembles from the University of South Florida. It was an amazing concert that featured the best in Texas. Our program is proud to have someone represent our community! Way to go, Elena!!

39 Soloists and 6 Ensembles competed today at the Region UIL Solo and Ensemble contest today! Out of 39 solos, 34 solos received a Superior Rating. 13 Solos and 2 Ensembles have earned a trip to the State UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest in May! Congratulations to these students for all their hard work! Special thanks goes to our esteemed collaborative artists today, Mr. Paulino Villarreal and Ms. Stephanie Rodriguez. Thanks for supporting us on our trip Mrs. Mary Rokohl Brown and Mrs. Jennifer Casas!

Today members of our choir were invited to sing the national anthem for a naturalization ceremony at the US District Courthouse in Corpus Christi. Our students love giving back to the community and we’re glad we can perform in this ceremony for our new citizen neighbors!

Today our 6 Area Candidates auditioned for seats in the TMEA All-State Choirs, and we’re happy to say that Elena Perez made the Large School All State Treble Choir. We’re so very proud of Elena and alll the candidates for their hard work and dedication to this process! Some of these kids have had this music since June, and have come such a long way in their musical journey. We appreciate Mrs. Mary Rokohl-Brown, and Mrs. Jennifer Casas for accompanying these kids to their audition. Special thanks to Dennis Richardson for helping these students get ready for their auditions!

Elena will perform with the Large School All State Treble Choir at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio on February 14, 2026 as part of the Texas Music Educator Association’s Annual Convention.

On Saturday, 7 of our Area candidates and alternates went to Houston to participate in a workshop designed to prepare them for their next audition in January! Opportunities like this are what help make our program successful! Thank you to Denise Eaton and staff for putting on this wonderful clinic and helping our area candidates become better musicians!

GPHS Choir Students competed in the LSC All Region Mixed and Region Treble Choirs this past Saturday Nov. 8 in Alice, TX

8 J-V students auditioned for the Region Treble Choir and 6 earned a spot in the Choir!

36 Varsity Students auditioned for the LSC All-Region Mixed Choir and 25 earned a spot in the choir and 6 members are moving on to Area auditions in January! We also have 5 Area Alternates who will be preparing for those auditons as well!

We want to thank our friends and family for their support along with Mr. Dennis Richardson, Professor Emeritus Del Mar College, Dr. Ross Bernhardt, Director of Choral Activities at TAMUCC and Dr. Jessica Spafford, Associate Professor of Voice at TAMUCC who have helped us on our journey toward these auditions.

Special Thanks to Suzanne Gardner, Jenna Crowley, and Dallas Reeves for being our Chaperones for this competition

And a huge thank you to Jennifer Casas, our GPISD Fine Arts Secretary for taking care of all administrative and financial duties along with being a chaperone for this event!

We’re looking forward to our future competition in January but also our Winter Concert in December. Be on the lookout for more announcements to come!
