Side x Side All Side x Side programs integrate multi-disciplinary classroom learning with intensive arts instruction.

Side x Side puts curiosity and engagement back into learning through innovative, arts-integrated in-school programs, professional development, and creative community art programs. Side x Side ignites academic excellence in education through comprehensive arts integration, bringing critical thinking, creativity and innovation into the classroom through arts-based programs. Side x Side recognizes th

e power of the arts to improve standards-based education and tie all instruction to Maine Learning Results and Common Core standards. Side x Side provides standards-based K-12 arts integration programs, a system of professional development, support for teachers and artists and assessments of overall impact on academic achievement, motivation, creativity and teacher confidence. Side x Side is supported by a US Department of Education Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination grant over four years.

Fifth graders at Presumpscot School participated in a Side x Side program that integrated an environmental literacy unit with printmaking. After studying ocean waves (the school mascot), students worked with teaching artist Cat LaBarre to carve linocut blocks to create individual wave images. They then used the blocks to print their wave designs onto a large banner to create one collective ocean design highlighting the strength of community.

First graders at Ocean Avenue Elementary School participated in a Side x Side program that integrated a literacy and science unit on Maine birds with drawing and bookmaking. After choosing a Maine bird to research, students focused on their bird’s feet, feathers, beaks, and wings. They then worked with teaching artist Sarah Boyden to draw each bird body part and create a bird riddle book to showcase their research, writing, drawing, and riddles!
