A week from today! On Free First Thursday (June 4) join curators Mary Weaver Chapin, Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings who welcomes Leah Triplett, Curator of Contemporary Art at PAFA The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, for a special wide-ranging talk on Paul Harris on occasion of the artist’s centennial and the exhibition “Paul Harris: Shut-In Suite, 1969–1970,” on view through June 7.

Learn about the postmodern sculptor’s suite of lithographs, a new addition to the museum’s collection, which Harris made during a fellowship at Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles. “A shut-in’s intimate reflections on his environment,” the “crisp images appear as still lifes seen through a zoom lens.”

“In ‘The Girl on the Beach,’ the memory of the shut-in catches an intimate rainbow-colored sky and part of a parasol. In some of the images single objects are focused upon, taking on an iconic character.”

This Saturday, discover a new exhibition organized by student curators!

Fourth and fifth grade curators conducted research in the museum’s exhibitions and vault, met archivists and registrars, and regularly met with PAM curators. “Harriet Tubman Center Museum” is an exhibition of 28 pieces from the permanent collection and the outcome of their research and collaborative process.

From selecting the work, to deciding the placement of the art, and writing exhibition text, experiential learning helped the young curators shape their own version of a museum, underscoring what is possible when institutions, artists, and community partners work collaboratively to shift curatorial authorship.

Led by artist and educator Lisa Jarrett, the students are part the Harriet Tubman Center for Expanded Curatorial Practice at KSMOCA-King School Museum of Contemporary Art.

🪷 Today the streets of Seoul, Korea are illuminated with paper lanterns like this one for Yeon Deung Hoe, or Lotus Lantern Festival, celebrating Buddha’s birthday. Made from hanji, Korean handmade paper, the lanterns expel darkness and ignorance through enlightenment and the Buddha's wisdom.

This monumental lantern is part of the exhibition, “Word in Flower: Arts of Buddhism,” displaying East Asian Buddhist art from the collection. From sculpture, to calligraphy, to contemporary works, the presentation explores the rich diversity of Buddhist visual culture, including a monumental photo triptych by Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Stay tuned for a new selection as the light sensitive works are replaced in July.

Located in a speakeasy-style lounge accessible through the Museum’s Level 3 galleries, the evening highlights three exceptional wineries: Eyrie Vineyards, Illahe Vineyards, and Brooks Wine. As dedicated members of the Deep Roots Coalition, these producers are committed to sustainable, dry-farmed vineyards, environmental stewardship, and crafting wines that express their unique place and vintage.

Enjoy two featured pours from each of the three wineries, presented in reusable wine service glass by Revino. The wine tasting tickets are $25 for members, $30 for non-members.

Spanning a century of work by Northwest artists, “To Gather Your Leaving” reflects on experiences of movement, migration, and home.

As a child, artist Roger Shimomura was imprisoned at Minidoka War Relocation Center in Idaho, an incarceration camp during World War II that held 13,000 Japanese Americans, mostly from Seattle and Portland.

Shimomura channels his experiences with discrimination into vibrant, satirical pop art, comically wrestling with the paradox of being an American viewed as an outsider.
