With sadness we bid farewell to Harry van der Kamp. The Dutch bass singer passed away this week and we already feel the loss. We had the pleasure of working with him in 2014. Here is a clip of us rehearsing for that program (The Vocal Concerto - except by J.C. Bach).

With sadness, we bid farewell to Harry van der Kamp (1947–2026).

Dutch Bass Harry van der Kamp died this week at the age of 79.

Born in Kampen, Van der Kamp first studied law and psychology in Amsterdam and then went on to study singing with Elizabeth Cooymans and Max van Egmond at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory.

Van der Kamp also founded the Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam in 1984 and performed madrigals of the 16th and 17th century and composers such as Carlo Gesualdo, Emilio de’ Cavalieri and Scipione Lacorcia.

We had the pleasure of working with him in 2014. Please enjoy this short clip of that program.

Baroque Violin vs. Modern Violin — A Clip from PBO's All Ages Concert

Same instrument family, two completely different stories. In this clip from Portland Baroque Orchestra's All Ages Concert (November 15, 2025), Concertmaster Carla Moore and violinist Toma Iliev demonstrate the differences between the Baroque violin and its modern counterpart.

Hear how differences in construction, strings, and setup shape distinct sounds — from the gut strings and shorter fingerboard of the Baroque instrument to the steel strings and higher tension of the modern violin. Carla and Toma also explore how each instrument was designed for different settings and playing styles, and how technique and bow hold shifted along with the instrument itself over time.

This clip is from our All Ages Concert, designed to introduce early music to listeners of every age and experience level — no background required, just curious ears.

Featuring:
Carla Moore, Concertmaster, Portland Baroque Orchestra
Toma Iliev, Violinist, Portland Baroque Orchestra
Julian Perkins, Artistic Director

Looking for more great music? Perhaps ... with wine?
The Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival returns for its 11th season, "Inventing America," August 8–23, across three Dundee Hills wineries: Appassionata, Archery Summit, and Sokol Blosser. Marking the country's 250th anniversary, this season centers on composer-in-residence Lei Liang, whose work runs alongside classical masterworks throughout the summer. Each evening pairs live chamber music with a curated wine tasting. PBO subscribers can take 20% off tickets with code BAROQUE26, and guests attending opening weekend, August 8–9, will receive a free CD.
