Literary Mixtape

Literary Mixtape I.e., we want them to read you a mixtape, so that you then know and love what they know and love. In our minds, this is something of a romantic gesture.

Literary Mixtape is a reading series presented by Fort Saint Davids (and by your faithful hosts, Erik Bader and Matthew Korfhage) in which we essentially ask people to DJ books instead of music, for an appreciative crowd. The idea is we’re inviting assorted stout-hearted, stand-up to people read literature of whatever stripe (poem, fiction, essay) that they’re genuinely, personally excited about,

and that they think other people would be excited about, and maybe even mention why, for a period of about 20 minutes apiece. Past readers have included Jonathan Raymond, Tom Bissell, Arthur Bradford, Paul Collins, Matthew Dickman, Emily Kendal Frey, Kevin Sampsell, B. Frayn Masters, Pauls Toutonghi, Sarah Mirk (Portland Mercury), Nathan Howdeshell (the Gossip), Pete Swanson (Yellow Swans), and Barry Sanders. We're being nice enough even to host the event during Valentine's quite-late happy hour, in the hopes that this will make you happy.

Awesome interview with former Literary Mixtape reader Jon Raymond at the Tin House blog. It's a great read. Also solidarity: we don't like tall bikes either.

Rob Spillman:“The Broadway Gang”(which appears in the latest issue of Tin House)centers around Portland’s Occupy encampment. Looking at the Occupy movement now, both in Portland and nationally, are you encouraged? Hopeful?

Thanks to Lisa Wells, Emily Kendal Frey and Matt Brown for a fantastic evening of variegated readings. Thanks to Mary Robison for independently being on two of our readers' dockets. (Leonard Michaels still holds the record with three out of three.) Thanks to everyone who came for being perfect. Oh, and Cameron? Your wallet's behind the bar.
