2 It masks and perverts a basic reality. We live in a globalized world with industrialized agriculture systems that have erased the seasons. Back in the day you were stuck with what was seasonal – you ate tomatoes and watermelon when it was summer, and when winter rolled in, you were stuck with nature’s s**t bag – like potatoes and kale. But now pumpkin is available year round, especially when canned. But we are fooled and beguiled into seasonal hype to feed into an industry of luxury.

3 It masks the absence of a basic reality. Until 2015, pumpkin spice lattes didn’t even have pumpkin. Pumpkin spice denotes the spice cocktail that goes into a pumpkin pie. And when pumpkin puree was finally introduced into the drink, it wasn’t even 100% fu***ng pumpkin, it’s usually a combination of sweeter, hard-skinned winter squashes, like butternuts and hubbards. Pumpkin spice has no referent in reality, it exists for its own sake. The only thing “pumpkin spice” refers to is itself.
