On Saturday October 19th 3 of our SVA representatives were nominated for and attended the Master Arts Education Plan meeting. All three testified in front of roughly two dozen music and arts teachers, talking about problems with the arts programs around the district from a students perspective. Four more MAEP meeting are scheduled before the end of the year. Keep a look out for for an up and coming meeting with Superintendent Guerrero!

We have just completed a very successful meeting with board of education member Michelle DePass! As a Jefferson HS alumni, a former Jefferson Dancer, and an advocate for arts in our schools, Ms. Depass will be a big support to our cause! We are all very excited to work with her in the future and are already planning our next meeting!

Thx and Beaumont MS for hearing our voices for equitable access to middle school VAPA programming! Beaumont MS has adopted a 7 period day, allowing students to do both a world language and a visual/performing art form. Students at BMS will receive equitable access to all programs. After not not even two months after the SVA’s formation, our efforts along with the effort of many other advocates are finally making connection and building communities.

The Arts Tax.
Multnomah county has an arts tax which is basically $35 per household member. This tax was passed six years ago and it was supposed to be in addition to the funding the district was giving the schools for one arts teacher. This arts teacher could be either dance, music, visual art, or theater.
However, many principles have used the art tax to find the one arts teacher position at their school, while taking the other FTE that the district supplied and buying another teacher with that.
For some reason, other school districts that are inside Multnomah county besides PPS, such as David Douglas and Parkrose school District, are doing better with the arts tax then PPS is. David Douglas not only has music district wide, but also art. Parkrose is adding FTE and hiring a new music teacher position.
PPS students deserve Music AND Art classes K-12. PPS: How is the Arts Tax money being spent?

Just finished SVA’s second ever personal meeting! Water Avenue Coffee has become our new permanent meeting location. We left with plans to expand our representation to our other performing arts programs including choir, dance, and orchestra. We plan on attending the PPS board meeting Tuesday, May 14th and spreading our message to the board and any others willing to listen!
