Portland Center Stage is the largest theater company in Portland, and among the top 20 regional theaters in the country. Established in 1988 as a branch of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the company became independent in 1994. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Marissa Wolf and Interim Managing Director Liam Kaas-Lentz, the company produces a mix of classic, contemporary, and world premie

re productions, along with a variety of high-quality education and community programs. As part of its dedication to new play development, the company has produced 28 world premieres, many of which were developed at its annual JAW New Play Festival. Portland Center Stage’s home is The Armory, aan historic building originally constructed in 1891. After a major renovation, The Armory opened in 2006 as the first building on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the first performing arts venue in the country and the first building in Portland, to achieve a LEED Platinum rating. OPERATIONS ASSISTANT
▫️Part time, $20/hr
▫️Approximately 20 hrs/week

Seeking a team-oriented individual to help us maintain, improve, and secure The Armory. The Operations Assistant works in an active environment setting up and assisting with events, handling facility operations during productions, and performing facility maintenance, cleaning, and organization projects such as painting, fixture installation, and basic electrical work. The ideal candidate will have a flexible schedule, be self-motivated, adaptable, have excellent communication and customer service skills, and be willing to take on occasionally heavy physical labor.

From literal armory to the home of Portland Center Stage, The Armory at 128 NW 11th Ave has lived a LIFE.

Built in 1891, the First Regiment Armory Annex was intended as a drill site for National Guard troops. There was even a shooting range in the basement! But because it was one of the few buildings in Portland that could handle large crowds, it quickly became host to public gatherings including speeches by Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson, as well as concerts, conventions, and exhibitions. Later on, it hosted professional wrestling and basketball events and even housed refugees from the 1948 Vanport Flood.

In 2006, Portland Center Stage moved in at the newly renovated Armory and we’ve been happy to call this extraordinary building home for 20 years.

Thanks to Erin Mackey, Northwest Fencing Center, Aaron Peterson of new body electric, and everyone who came out to commemorate the odd anniversary of THE PARENT TRAP—28ish years is truly a reason to celebrate!

Great scenic design is hard. That's why we rely on really talented, creative people to get the job done! Alex Meyer is one of those people.

Her designs have graced stages all over town, from Artists Repertory Theatre to Shaking The Tree Theatre, Profile Theatre, Third Rail Repertory Theatre, and beyond. We were lucky enough to work with Alex twice last season, on both LIZARD BOY and our co-production of FAT HAM with Portland Playhouse. We're delighted to have her back again on our 26/27 season opener, PRIDE & PREJUDICE. (Tickets are available now at pcs.org!)

🎥📖FUN FACT:
It’s a play! It’s a film! It’s a novel! It’s all of the above! John Buchan’s 1915 novel THE 39 STEPS was adapted by Charles Bennett, Ian Hay, and Alfred Hitchcock for a 1935 film that Hitchcock also directed, which was then adapted by Patrick Barlow into a Drama Desk, Olivier, and Tony Award-winning 2008 play. It’s a history as twisty as the plot!



💕FUN FACT:
Playwright a.k. payne won the 2025 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for FURLOUGH’S PARADISE. We were honored to welcome a.k. to JAW this summer to workshop their gorgeous new play ARK (OF CYPRESS WOOD), and we can’t wait to see how it develops. FURLOUGH’S PARADISE premiered at the Alliance Theatre, directed by Tinashe Kajese-Bolden (who, incidentally, is directing the next play our upcoming season).



🎸FUN FACT:
Playwright York Walker’s inspiration for COVENANT was the myth of Robert Johnson, a blues musician who is said to have made a deal with the devil at a Mississippi crossroads—his soul in exchange for supernatural musical talent. So you know this one’s going to be a spine tingler! COVENANT’s Director, Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, also directed the 2024 premiere of a.k. payne’s FURLOUGH’S PARADISE at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta.

If you try to count along as things go awry in PETER PAN GOES WRONG, you won’t get a moment’s rest. More than 300 mishaps will occur with precise timing, engineering, and total safety...even though it will all feel like the most delightful and unhinged kind of chaos.
