Most beginners think the power comes from both hands.

It doesn’t.

In this conversation with Brian O’Hare of , we break down one of the most misunderstood fundamentals of throwing on the wheel. The majority of the pressure comes from your outside hand, scraping, lifting, and compressing the clay from the base upward. The inside hand is there to guide, not force.

Understanding where the pressure actually comes from can completely change the way you approach your pulls and help you create taller, stronger forms with more control.

This was just a small piece of a much bigger conversation. Full episode in my bio. 🌀

Maybe the worst kiln disaster ever 😳🫠

Brian of shares the story of a devastating studio mishap that occurred when an assistant accidentally coated every kiln shelf with red glaze, believing it was kiln wash.

The result was catastrophic. Pots fused to the shelves, kiln furniture was destroyed, and thousands of dollars worth of work was lost right before an important show.

It’s a reminder that even the smallest mistakes in the studio can have enormous consequences, and that every potter has a few hard-earned lessons along the way.

This was just a small piece of a much bigger conversation. Full episode in my bio. 🌀

The pottery wheel teaches a lesson most people learn the hard way. Before you can build anything meaningful, you need a solid foundation.

Brian O’Hare of and I dive into one of the most important skills in ceramics, centering clay. Going slowly, staying in control, and learning to work with intention rather than force. It’s one of the hardest skills to master on the wheel, and a powerful reminder that rushing the fundamentals usually creates bigger problems later.

The same principle applies far beyond pottery. You can’t build a strong piece, a business, a relationship, or a life on a shaky foundation.

This piece was made by a junior in high school already receiving national recognition for his ceramics work. 🔥
clayworks and I first connected through one of my Raku firing workshops after his teacher encouraged him to keep experimenting and pushing boundaries with his work. This was actually his second workshop with me, and he was exploring a combination of white crackle and copper Raku glazes when this piece emerged from the kiln.

The spiderweb crackle across the top half immediately caught my attention. It’s one of those surfaces that keeps pulling you in the longer you look at it.

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching Raku is helping pass that same excitement and curiosity on to the next generation of makers.

If you want to learn how to master this process for yourself, comment the word RAKU and I’ll help you get started.

Success isn’t always about the awards. Sometimes it’s about still loving the work years later.

reflects on how his definition of success has evolved throughout his career. For Adam, success has never been just about recognition, it’s been about having the opportunity to work on meaningful records with incredible artists for a lifetime. As a seven-time Grammy-winning mastering engineer, the awards helped sustain and elevate his career, but what continues to drive him is the chance to keep showing up every day and helping artists bring their music to life at the highest level possible.

There’s something powerful about building a life around the thing you genuinely never want to stop doing.
