Jewish Theatre Collaborative (JTC) engages people in Jewish Stories from the past and present, exploring values, traditions and history in order to better comprehend the diversity of contemporary human experience. Central to our work are values of participation, depth and learning. JTC events, performed at both traditional and non-traditional theatre venues, bring together Jewish and non-Jewish au

diences to explore the complex legacy of the Jewish existence in the modern world. Our performances provide an ideal environment for exploration, awakening curiosity, opening minds, and challenging stereotypes. We use collaborative strategies to help partner organizations achieve social goals through the power of theatre to inform and engage. After performances, JTC creates opportunities for its audience to ask questions, building on the on-stage conversation to foster real connections for our community with complex issues and topics arising from the Jewish experience.

Marking and mourning the passing of artist Henk Pander,
November 21st 1937 - April 7th 2023. What an opportunity to collaborate with him at Jewish Theatre Collaborative on A Pigeon and a Boy and the Ministry of Special Cases. Beautiful piece about his life's work: https://www.orartswatch.org/henk-pander-oregon-art-giant-dies-at-85/?fbclid=IwAR0fNMvCO2LbVwQNXqfYVaq4jER1UcZPV7hXQ8huTjMmSrC5fhrEFV-uAnU

We mourn the passing of Julie Diamond, a gadol of our community, who led the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation for years and served as president of Jewish Theatre Collaborative in its final years of production. May her memory - one of joyous and collaborative community building - be forever a blessing. Our hearts are with her family, may they find comfort among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Photo: Julie Diamond Upon hearing the news of Julie Diamond’s death on the morning of August 12, like many people, I literally lost my breath. I knew she was in the struggle of her life, as we had discussed it often. But, we had plans to get together in a couple of weeks. We...

Our final participant in the panel was Salah Ansary, a refugee from Kabul, Afghanistan who brought his family to the states and has committed his professional life, more than 30 years, to the resettlement of immigrants in the NW with Lutheran Community Services. Displacement, fractured families, Immigration at once an act of survival and of sacrifice by parents for the sake of their children, their children's' future. . Over 60 million displaced globally, more than 21 displaced outside their country of origin. And due to budget cuts, Lutheran Community Services NW had to cut a quarter of their regional workforce. Heartache. Call to action: Support with cold hard cash. Join me. in honor of Salah Ansary and his work. http://www.lcsnw.org/

Another throw back. In 2008, JTC engaged in its first pilot community collaboration. We joined with the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at PSU to present Israel Onstage. We gathered community around Israeli plays to explore the complexity of the contemporary Israeli experience. Our goal was to raise the level of literacy about Israel in Portland and create a context for people to discuss it thoughtfully. We ran the program for three years with great success. Plays featured some of the best Israeli playwrights who were wrestling with difficult and diverse subject matter. They included Master of the House, Pangs of the Messiah, Tea, Women's Minyan, The Banality of Love, Plonter, He Walked in the Fields,High Noon and Milano. Lots of great stories and lots of great conversations. Here are some highlights. Picture credits as always - Friderike Heuer

2010 brought Kindertransport to the stage at ART, with performances by Heidi Hunter, Patricia A. Hunter, Kate Mura, Doren Elias Jack Wells, Michele Mariana. So very many guests who came from diverse communities in Portland and bravely shared their stories of generational trauma. Additional programs included Fugue -Exile, Emigration and Displacement - an exhibit of poetry in conversation with collage images by Friderike Heuer, as well as staged readings of In Darfur and Honey Brown Eyes. Remembering two extraordinary and beloved women who were involved: Emily Georges Gottfried and Chella Kryszek.
