The Kit Demos Off/Axis Big Band plays an eclectic mix of hard-driving swing music from Thelonious Monk and the Charles Mingus Big Band, Afro-Cuban works by Dafnis Prieto, avant-garde pieces from Anna Webber and Roswell Rudd, and modern big band tunes by the Dave Holland Big Band.

The band boasts 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxophones, bass, drums, piano, guitar, and vocals. Several vocal charts feature singer Kate Schothius. Plus original arrangements of Eddie Harris, Elmo Hope, and Roswell Rudd.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to Mayo Street Arts. 🖤

Hobey Ford’s “Animalia” explores the world of animals through movement, music and visually stunning puppetry. Breaking out of the traditional puppet theater booth, Hobey turns the whole theatre into his performance stage to the delight of audience members of all ages.

The performance includes a magnified look at butterfly and frog metamorphosis, the world of birds and a classic undersea ballet of whales, frolicking dolphins and otters.

Hobey is the winner of puppetry's highest honor, the UNIMA Citation of Excellence, and recipient of three Jim Henson Foundation grants. He is known for excellence in puppetry performance and craft.

"About Ram" brings excerpts from the Ramayana to life through through animation, projected images, dance, masks and puppets!

Ram, the prince of Ayodhya is exiled by his father. His wife, Sita, is kidnapped and kept prisoner by Ravan, the king of Lanka. In the journey and the bloody war that follows with Ravan, Ram becomes a king, forced to choose between the duty of the throne and the love of his wife. He rules alone for the next 10,000 years.

This adaptation looks at Ram as a human being and not as “God.” It traces Ram’s inner journey as a man tormented by his forced separation from his wife Sita. He then fights a fierce battle with the demons to rescue Sita only to be tormented by his own inner demons. Is Sita still pure? Will the people of Ayodhya ever accept her?

Join Mayo Street Arts at Fort Allen Park for an outdoor spectacle of puppets, protest, and celebration overlooking Casco Bay!

The one and only Bread & Puppet Circus is back to confront our upside-down situation with stilt dancers, paper maché beasts of all sizes, and a riotous brass band.

After the performance, Bread & Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye bread with aioli, and Cheap Art—books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press—will be for sale.

This is an outdoor performance at Fort Allen Park on Portland’s Eastern Promenade (49 Eastern Promenade). A chair or blanket to sit on, sunscreen, and water are recommended.
