-Celestial Eye-

A partial moon and its refractive light formed this spectral display in the final stages of dusk - a "moondog" or paraselene shining in the ice of our atmosphere appeared along the moon's celestial ring. I'm not sure I had ever seen it before, but on that night, this flushed in the sky and I was awestruck with the phenomena above me, low in the sky over the owyhee desert. Silvery tones in the refracted clouds seemed to ripple and change in intensity as I watched..

Thanks for tuning in - I've been sorting through my files and have many more beautiful moments to share. Several of my calendars have found a home, thank you to those!

Have a peaceful day. It's sunny where I'm at.

- Moonlit Dawn -

Quietly the sky began to illuminate with dawn while the land glowed from the moon, low in the opposite horizon. As the dawn light grew, it overpowered the lunar light. In the minutes where the two sources evenly acted on the landscape, the desert floor and the sky above seemed to sing together a perfect low harmony, one not overpowering the other but contributing to the rosy blue glow. Gradually the sun overcame, moon set further as the sky blazed red in the clouds. I watched the light show from my sleeping bag on the desert tiles, tripping the shutter and pointing the camera as needed. Breathing with the landscape and the light -

I hope you will enjoy and please share as you wish! This image is "October" in my desert wilderness calendar.

-Land of Visions-

On a spit between two ancient lakes, First Peoples documented their journeys on large boulders. Many hundreds of years later, the landscape has changed but their markings are still visible standing tall above the sage. I've spent much time here exploring the petroglyphs, which range in design from documentary animal drawings to abstractions of mystery, great beasts with multiple heads, and human figures. I'm inspired to look upon them with respect and wonderment, what did these people know that we don't know? This ancient monument charts the "otherness" with precise and simple symbolism.

Shown here is one of the larger stones in a dusky sunset. The light was with me that day. I hope you viewers will enjoy this desert view.

-Mountaintop Experience-

A stunning moment within a slow burning sunset on Steens Mountain, which dissolved into rainbows, lightning, golds to crimson as a storm passed over the peak.

This was definitely one of those meaningful, will not forget, experiences for me - having submerged myself fully into this desert and its crooked and desolate, undiscovered backcountry - here was a moment of breakthrough. When the Steens loop road opened, I headed up to see the second spring season (summer, truly) as the snow melted away. I found myself looking for flowers on this ridge off the beaten path, and fell in love with the view - I left my gear and hiked those miles back to the truck again to get my sleeping bag and stove, and returned to the ridge. As the evening unfolded, the light began to glow and sing, slowly the atmosphere changed, and Violet Green swallows darted around me and my camera. That camera was clicking away every 5 seconds or so in time-lapse, which left me free from the gear to experience this awesome moment, alone and fully present. That music which plays on high mountains in the storm was loud, glorious.. the climax of this desert symphony. As I was enjoying this rainbow, a flash of lightning appeared within it - I didn't catch that moment on camera, but more important that I was fully invested in the scene. I was swallowed in a red fog as the dusk finally enveloped the landscape. The lightning picked up again after dark, though now it was in the next range and I was viewing from afar. My sleeping bag perched a few feet from this view was the only separation between me and the great celestial blanket above, as I prefer to sleep when in nature. Great winds and even greater silence lulled me to sleep for many hours - it seemed as though I could have dreamed the whole thing, but the resulting timelapse capture proves the witness. I'm thankful for these mysterious, awe striking, bewildering moments in the depths of my mind, which make up my experience of the wilderness.

Shut off and tune in... discover that music.

Thank you for viewing my work, I hope you are enjoying these new scenes. I appreciate folks clicking "share" to get my art to new audiences!

Silent Waves ~

The striking forms of our desert ranges are visually transformed as storm after storm sculpt and blow the ice in the winter months. I was enamored by the lines and layers presented with such powerful contrast from this viewpoint and watched as localized storms surged over the mountain that day.

Those days watching wind and mountain wave in and out of the cloud are so important to me. I'm due for another couple weeks of that coming up soon. I will be sharing some new work before I depart.

This photo is that which is displayed for November in my 2018 Desert Wilderness Calendar. I've compiled images of the amazing southeastern Oregon Desert and it's many moods from my in depth travels throughout these mysterious, grand landscapes. A link to the calendar is displayed in the comments; it is purchasable online through my website. Consider this purchase for a desert loving family member or friend in this season of gifting!

"Back Alley"

It is a sacred thing, the design of these vast spaces in the landscape. The desert displays itself, quietly symbolic of the geometric schemes comprising all of the physical and beyond physical world. To those who listen closely with their senses, the symbolism is not so subdued, it is rather a constantly expanding web of connection, vast and intricate as the landscape itself. Everything in that horizon is in the leaves of sage, in the smallest ant, in the slightest ray of sunlight.

Pictured here, a lake remnant and ranges in evening storm light. Oregon

Desert Montane

First light reached my mountain saddle camp, and calmness came upon the landscape after a night of never-ceasing, shuffling wind. For a few more moments; strikingly beautiful between dawn and day, still easy on the eyes.

Music, like pastel; meadowlark song and the softening breeze on the steppe.
